Human Factors and Ergonomics are disciplines devoted to an understanding of the relationships between humans and technology. This is an interdisciplinary applied area that seeks to understand the human factors that apply to the design of systems and devices of all kinds, and to apply that knowledge to achieve compatibility in the design of interactive systems of people, machines, and environments to ensure their effectiveness, safety, and ease of performance. The term arises from engineers' interest in the human factors governing the efficiency of the operator within a human-machine system.

Human Factors and Ergonomics
"HUMAN FACTORS," "HUMAN FACTORS ENGINEERING," AND "HUMAN ERROR" Terms associated with "human factors" include "human characteristics," "human factors engineering," "ergonomics," "human engineering," and "the human element." "Human Factors" Viewed as "Human Characteristics" The phrase "human factors" is often used to mean "human characteristics." Various human factors in this sense generally fall into one of three groups of human characteristics : (1) physical characteristics, (2) physiological characteristics, and (3) psychological or behavioral characteristics. These groups of human factors are not necessarily mutually exclusive. Here human factors defines the nature of our "humanness," that is, the characteristics of "being human." Physical human factors include physical attributes of the human body such as height, weight, arm reach, center of gravity, etc. Physiological human factors include such things as muscle strength and endurance in different body positions, visual acuity, tolerance to extremes of temperature, frequency range of human hearing, etc.

http://www.drivingfatigue.com/hf_and_e.htm
Human Factors/Ergonomics
Human factors/ergonomics is a broad, long established, internationally recognized scientific discipline and system design profession. Human factors and ergonomics professionals improve safety, comfort, and productivity by developing better operator selection criteria, licensing systems, training, operating procedures, and equipment designs. They do this by taking into account detailed scientific knowledge of human biomechanical, physiological, psychological, and anthropometric characteristics. Knowledge concerning human capabilities and limitations continues to grow as a result of human factors research that has long been supported and/or conducted by the government (e.g., Department of Transportation, Department of Defense, FAA, NASA), industry, and about 65 universities in the United States alone that offer graduate degree programs in human factors and ergonomics. Human factors/ergonomics knowledge is extensively documented in numerous textbooks, scientific journals, design guidelines, and design standards. It has been skillfully applied by human factors and ergonomics practitioners in many practical, real world settings of great diversity, helping people to operate things ranging from hand tools to tractor-trailer rigs to space shuttles more safely and effectively. The principal professional society representing the needs of human factors and ergonomics professionals in the United States is the Human Factors and Ergonomics Society of America. The HFES members, representing 47 countries, participate in over 20 technical and professional groups including Forensics, Safety, Consumer Products, Computer Systems, Environmental Design, Industrial Ergonomics, and others. Annual meetings of the HFES include symposia, scientific workshops, panel discussions, and technical paper presentations that are published in the Annual Meeting

    Human Factors in Virtual Environments
Professor Kay Stanney - University of Central Florida ABSTRACT This paper reviews several significant human factors issues that could stand in the way of virtual reality realizing its full potential. These issues involve maximizing human performance efficiency in virtual environments, minimizing health and safety issues, and circumventing potential social issues through proactive assessment. Virtual reality technology will be used to advance many fields, including medicine, education, design, training, and entertainment. The reality is, however, a considerable amount of systematic research must be done before VR technology receives widespread use. If VR systems are to be effective and well received by their users, researchers need to focus significant efforts on addressing a number of human factors issues. This paper provides an overview of many of these human factors issues, including: human performance efficiency in virtual worlds; which is likely influenced by tasks characteristics, user characteristics, human sensory and motor physiology, multi-modal interaction, and the potential need for new design metaphors; health and safety issues, of which cybersickness may pose the most concern; and the social impact of the technology.

    Introduction
The ORITE human factors and ergonomics laboratory focuses on the relationship of the automobile driver to the road environment, especially in terms of improving traffic flow and driver safety and comfort. Research topics include traffic signs, pavement markings, curve delineation, Road Weather Information Systems (RWIS), work zones, traffic signals, and other related technologies. The core research efforts have focused on nighttime visibility of pavement markings and legibility and visibility of traffic signs under varying conditions, such as nighttime, rain, snow, and fog. Improved visibility and legibility of traffic control devices allows for a longer driver reaction time and less stress. These in turn lead to greater driver comfort and better driver decisions, ultimately resulting in fewer driver errors and traffic accidents, especially by elderly or impaired drivers. Major sponsors of ORITE Human Factors research include the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), Ohio (ODOT) and other state departments of transportation, and industry.

The topic of the meeting was the new Hand Activity Level Threshold Limit Value (TLV) published by the American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists (ACGIH). During the meeting, Wendi Latko shared the standard and some research she conducted at the University of Michigan that lead to portions of the standard. More than 30 people were in attendance from the two societies. We held our first meeting of 2001.
