Welcome to the HFES Directory of Human Factors/Ergonomics Consultants
There are currently 55 Consultants listed in the Directory. HFES is pleased to provide this searchable directory of human factors/ergonomics (HF/E) consultants and expert witnesses as a free service to potential clients. The directory contains listings created by HFES full Members in good standing who have paid a fee to promote their services. Full membership requires a degree in HF/E or a related field, as well as five full-time years or more of applicable work experience. Both individuals and companies are listed. A company must have at least two HFES full Members or Fellows on full-time staff. You can search for consultants by any combination of the following categories: (1) name of individual or company name, (2) specialty or expertise area, (3) geographical location, or all three categories. The detailed listing for a consultant contains full contact information and specialties and may also include (a) additional expertise areas; (b) educational background; (c) supplemental background, such as certifications or honors; and (d) consulting experience, listing past clients and/or projects. Efficacy of Human Factors
Human Factors is often used interchangeably with User Interface Design or Human-Computer Interface. There is a lot of overlap in these disciplines; however, Human Factors generally refers to hardware design while HCI generally refers to software design. Engineering Psychologist work in both disciplines and the overlap is considered greater than the difference. Optimum Human Factors Design requires a systematic approach to the design process. But, to ensure optimum performance, Usability Testing is required. This empirical testing permits naïve users to provide data about what does work as anticipated and what does not work. Only after the resulting repairs are made can a product be deemed to have a user optimized design. Today all large corporate and military manufacturers team design engineers with Engineering Psychologists to ensure optimum usability. Some of the prime industries relying on Human Factors for design consideration are: High Tech, aircraft, automobile, military, consumer products, and many other companies wanting an edge in the marketplace.

Human Factors Engineering deals with the design of systems and products that people use at work, in daily life and leisure. Human factors design typically involves examining the total system, comprising an acco unt of how users interact with the device(s) to perform their tasks on a workstation under a specific environment. Its objective is to ensure human-centered design, such that systems, jobs, products, user interfaces and environments, are designed to complement the physical and mental abilities of users, and also accommodate their limitations. Human-centered design begins with an understanding of users' characteristics and the tasks they are expected to perform. Functional support features and user interfaces are then designed to ensure safe and effective operation, so as to maximise the productivity of the overall system. Human-centered design ensures products and systems that are functionally appropriate and user friendly, and thus well accepted by their users. In the case of automation, Human Factors Engineering contributes to the specification of an optimal allocation of functions between the machine(s) and human(s). The more hi-tech and complex a device or system is, the more crucial Human Factors Engineering contributions would be. In this respect, an inadequate account of human factors might lead to system rejection, incomplete realisation of system potential, high incidence of human error, or worse, total failure of the system. What is HFES?
The Society's mission is to promote the discovery and exchange of knowledge concerning the characteristics of human beings that are applicable to the design of systems and devices of all kinds. The Society furthers serious consideration of knowledge about the assignment of appropriate functions for humans and machines, whether people serve as operators, maintainers, or users in the system. And, it advocates systematic use of such knowledge to achieve compatibility in the design of interactive systems of people, machines, and environments to ensure their effectiveness, safety, and ease of performance. The Society was founded in 1957. It has 21 technical groups and numerous local and student chapters. See our history page for a discussion of the Society's growth and development. A list of current officers and staff may be found on the leadership page. View the HFES Code of Ethics Please report problems with this site to our Webmaster

Engineering Psychology and Human Factors are studied at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in the context of the
Interdisciplinary Progran in Human Factors (IPHF). This effort, originally called the Engineering Psychology Joint Program, was
established in the early 1980's as a cooperative arrangement between the following three campus units: Faculty members within the program usually have cross-appointments between at least two of the above three campus units. Courses at both undergraduate and
graduate level are often cross-listed between the units.
