A short history of the Faculty of Civil Engineering
Early period (1887-1890):
The Faculty of Civil Engineering was established by Law AFMA of May 27, 1887, as one of the three "Schools of Industrial Arts". The "School of Arts" already existed since in 1873, located at a building on Patission Street, under the name "Metsovion Polytechneion".
The 1887 Law on "the establishment of the School of Industrial Arts in Athens" was the result of many years of effort by the professors of that time, who assisted in the re-organization of the existing school as an Institution of Higher Education with a four-year curriculum.
The organization and operation of the School were specified in the Bylaw of July 3, 1887. The first article of the Bylaw includes the definition: "The School of Industrial Arts, now consisting of three specialized schools, has as its goal the scientific education of civil and mechanical engineers, similar to those graduating from Higher Schools in Europe, as well as the education of surveyors and foremen".
The first 13 civil engineers graduated in 1890. The School operated under this organization until 1914.

A History of Biomedical Engineering
In its broadest sense, biomedical engineering has been with us for centuries, perhaps even thousands of years. In 2000, German archeologists uncovered a 3,000-year-old mummy from Thebes with a wooden prosthetic tied to its foot to serve as a big toe. Researchers said the wear on the bottom surface suggests that it could be the oldest known limb prosthesis. Egyptians also used hollow reeds to look and listen to the internal goings on of the human anatomy. In 1816, modesty prevented French physician Rene Laennec from placing his ear next to a young woman’s bare chest, so he rolled up a newspaper and listened through it, triggering the idea for his invention that led to today’s ubiquitous stethoscope.
No matter what the date, biomedical engineering has provided advances in medical technology to improve human health. Biomedical engineering achievements range from early devices, such as crutches, platform shoes, wooden teeth, and the ever-changing cache of instruments in a doctor’s black bag, to more modern marvels, including pacemakers, the heart-lung machine, dialysis machines, diagnostic equipment, imaging technologies of every kind, and artificial organs, implants and advanced prosthetics. The National Academy of Engineering estimates that there are currently about 32,000 bioengineers working in various areas of health technology.

ORIGIN

The Department of Defense Human Factors Engineering Technical Group (DoD HFE TAG) was implemented by a Memorandum of Understanding signed by the Assistant Secretaries of the Services in November 1976 for the purpose of coordinating and communicating research and development at the working level among the services and other Government agencies involved in Human Factors Engineering. The first HFE TAG meeting convened on August 9-10, 1977 in Fort Washington, Pennsylvania.
GOALS
The major goal of the HFE TAG is to provide a mechanism for the timely exchange of technical information in the development and application of human factors engineering by enhancing the coordination among Government agencies involved in HFE technology research, development, and application. The HFE TAG also assists, as required, in the preparation and coordination of tri-service documents, and sponsors in-depth technical interaction, which aids in identifying HFE technical issues and technology gaps.
SCOPE
Because of the diversity of the subject matter covered by the HFE discipline, the scope of the technical areas addressed by the HFE TAG is broad. For the purposes of the HFE TAG, HFE is defined as dealing with the concepts, data, methodologies and procedures which are relevant to the development, operation and maintenance of hardware and software systems. The subject matter subsumes all technologies aimed at understanding and defining the capabilities of human operators and maintainers.

Solar System Exploration for the Next Decade
Pluto and the other icy bodies of the Kuiper Belt constitute the most remote unexplored region of the solar system. Some scientists think a mission there might provide clues to many important scientific questions, including some related to the origin of life on Earth. That is because these icy objects are thought to have changed little since they first condensed around 4.6 billion years ago, and many planetary scientists believe that Earth and the other planets in the solar system may have been created from objects like those in the Kuiper Belt. A mission to the region has been on and off NASA's agenda for several years. The Bush administration eliminated funding for the mission in NASA's 2003 budget, citing the high cost involved and the lack of a community consensus on its importance. But in the report New Frontiers in the Solar System: An Integrated Exploration Strategy , a committee of the National Research Council says that sending a probe to the Kuiper Belt and Pluto should be a high priority for NASA in solar system exploration.

From SAE, the largest publisher of mobility technology, Aerospace Engineering magazine's editorial covers the total life cycle of both aircraft and space vehicles. It does this by providing the critical engineering and technical information those charged with designing, developing, producing, and maintaining industry's vehicles and its systems need to accomplish their work. A sampling of just some of the technical topics covered by its engineering editors include: propulsion, hydraulic/pneumatic systems, materials, avionics, electronics, fuels, lubricants, CAD/CAM/CAE/CIM, testing, manufacturing, safety, deicing, maintenance, space craft, helicopters, military aircraft, commercial aircraft, air transportation, business aircraft, private aircraft, regional aircraft, the World Aviation Congress, the Farnborough and Paris Air Show. Aerospace Engineering's unique focus makes it a most productive ad environment for suppliers wishing to reach the individuals responsible for vehicle content and purchase decisions. As engineers look to the magazine for thorough coverage of industry's latest design, product, process, and technology advances to aid in daily development challenges, advertised messages have a greater chance of getting noticed and being specified into future vehicles. It offers marketers a variety of resources for reaching the aerospace industry: from display advertising, classified and recruitment advertising, to online advertising and the rental of its mailing list.
