$8 Million from Micro-Technology Pioneer Made to College of Engineering and Computer Science
L-R Engineering School Dean Robert Dryden, Dr. Fariborz Maseeh and PSU President Daniel O. Bernstine Maseeh, a first-generation immigrant born in Iran, received both his B.S. in Structural Engineering and M.S. in Mathematics from PSU before earning a doctorate of science from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1990. Maseeh is an internationally known expert in the field of micro-technology (also known as MEMS) and is the founder and former president and chief executive officer of IntelliSense Corporation, based in Wilmington, Mass. In 2000, IntelliSense was acquired by Corning, Inc., after which Maseeh founded an investment management firm located in Southern California. "On behalf of The Massiah Foundation, we are proud to make this investment in PSU and hope it will help propel the College of Engineering and Computer Science to new heights," said Maseeh. "We are committed to PSU and will contribute in any way we can to achieve its goal of becoming one of the top academic institutions in the nation. Our work has just begun." PSU Alumnus Dr. Fariborz Maseeh presents PSU President Daniel O. Bernstine with a check for $8 million to the College of Engineering and Computer Science

Communication of Science and Technology
DIRECTOR David J. Ernst The study of the communication of science and technology is an interdisciplinary enterprise that draws upon the scientific, communication, and critical resources of Vanderbilt University. The program is designed for students who have an interest in science and technology and also are interested in how science and technology are communicated to the larger world outside science, engineering, and medicine.
The program is directed by David J. Ernst, chair of the Communication of Science and Technology committee.
Program of Concentration in Communication of Science and Technology
Students majoring in the communication of science and technology will be expected to complete a core of courses that are essential to understanding communication, as well as a coherent program of courses that provide scientific and engineering background. The major consists of 48 hours. In addition, all students are strongly encouraged, but not required, to participate in an internship program that will not provide major hours but will contribute to graduation credit.
Students seeking a second major within the College of Arts and Science may count a maximum of 6 hours of 200-level course work to meet the requirements of both majors.

Museum of Computer History [pdf] http://www.computerhistory.org/ The Museum of Computer History collection includes artifacts from pre-computing to supercomputing, with a primary emphasis on post-WWII electronic computing. Although the museum is located in Mountain View, CA, a sampling of artifacts are provided online with promises to continue digitizing the collection. The website also provides a wealth of information for anyone researching computer history or simply curious about milestones in computer history. A key feature of the website is the timeline for the history of computing from 1945 to 1990, where visitors can click by year to view "illustrated descriptions of significant innovations in hardware and software technology," or search for a specific topic. A separate page provides a timeline for the history of the internet and another for the "microprocessor evolution." The document archive portion of the website contains various documents including history books, manuals, biographical and other historical materials. [VF] Back to Contents Back to Top

About.com: History of the Slinky http://inventors.about.com/library/inventors/blslinky2.htm Did you know the Slinky was invented in 1945 by a Naval Engineer? This article from About.com gives a history of the slinky. Apparently the engineer was working on developing a meter that would monitor horsepower on naval battleships when he discovered the way the tension springs he was working with kept moving after they fell to the ground. As the story goes, "Richard remarked to his wife Betty, 'I think I can make a toy out of this'" and the Slinky was born. Along with the article are links to more interesting facts about slinky history, a letter from Betty James (his wife) and the physics and workings of spring coils (using Hooke's Law). Dont' miss the animated version of a slinky in motion it almost put me in a trance! [VF] Back to Contents Back to Top

What is engineering? Is a career in engineering for you? Is engineering technology for you?
  • What Do Technologists and Technicians Do? ... The 20 Greatest Engineering Achievements of the 20th Century What is engineering? Engineering is the art of applying scientific and mathematical principles, experience, judgment, and common sense to make things that benefit people. Engineers design bridges and important medical equipment as well as processes for cleaning up toxic spills and systems for mass transit. In other words, engineering is the process of producing a technical product or system to meet a specific need. Engineers have many different types of jobs to choose from, including research, design, analysis, development, testing, and sales positions. If you are interested in discovering new knowledge, you might consider a career as a research engineer. If you are imaginative and creative, design engineering may be for you. The work of analytical engineers most closely resembles what you do in your mathematics and science classes. If you like laboratory courses and conducting experiments, look into becoming a development engineer. Sales engineering could be a good choice if you are persuasive and like working with people.

HABS/HAER written historical and descriptive data pages.
WRITTEN HISTORY Historical research enables us to gain a greater understanding of historic structures and sites, and thus plays a central role in HABS/HAER recording. In producing written documentation, the historian places the structure within the appropriate context, addressing both the historical and architectural aspects of its significance. In discussing the origins and subsequent development of a structure, the historian also examines its relationship to regional and national trends, and considers associations with important persons or events. The history compliments the existing-condition drawings and photographs by documenting the changes and additions to the structure.
ABOUT THE PROCESS Producing written documentation involves collecting and investigating historical information and graphic documentation, analyzing the site or structure in question, and then synthesizing these elements to provide a better understanding of a site's historical importance. As much as possible, historians are asked to base their reports upon primary source materials such as inventories, wills, and tax assessments; company records and annual reports; correspondence, letters and personal interviews; trade catalogs, period newspapers and accounts from professional and trade journals, and relevant secondary or published material. Published material provides general background, sets the overall context for the period in question, and compares the site with others like it.

Technology and Engineering Wright Brothers National Memorial Wind, sand, and the dream of flight brought Wilbur and Orville Wright to Kitty Hawk, North Carolina, where they achieved the first successful airplane flights on December 17, 1903. With courage and perseverance these self taught engineers relied on teamwork and the application of scientific process. They had seemingly settled into respectability as proprietors of a small business. But the Wright brothers of Dayton, Ohio nurtured a barely respectable dream; the possibility of flight. Wilbur, four years older, quiet and intense, a dreamer who could lose himself in books. Orville was outgoing, talkative, and an immaculate dresser. Both combined intuitive mechanical ability with analytical intelligence.

State University emphasizes the history of technology, science,
and medicine in Europe and America since the later 18th century.
Its core faculty all teach and write in this chronological
period, thus providing extraordinary opportunity for graduate
study. Each, moreover, is broad gauged, expert in several areas
within this general focus. Each takes ideas seriously as the
basis for understanding science, technology, medicine and social
action. In 2004, HOTS program celebrates its th Anniversary with a new book Engineering in a Land-Grant Context: The Past, Present and Future of An Idea

CEE Committee (Moscow , Sep. 2001)
Presided over by Prof G P Lal, the Committee on Engineering and Environment (CEE) met on September 11, 2001, where the members deliberated upon the various issues concerning the overall functioning of the committee and also the future developmental plan of CEE. The members after a long deliberation unanimously resolved a set of decisions which are given hereunder. A World Summit to be held on ‘Sustainable Development on Rio+10, at Johannesburg in September 2002. In this context the Committee felt the need for associating COMTEC in drafting necessary documents. Endorsment of the idea of updating the earlier WFEO supported Christ Church Setting of Manifesto and reiterated that best practice for the education of engineers’ capabilities in environment and sustainably be proposed.
