    College has long history
    of excellence

    University Hall
    Mechanical Engineering
Bancroft Hall In the beginning, there was the Industrial College. Housed in University Hall, the first building on the University Of Nebraska Campus, the college included agriculture and the School of Mechanical Arts, a kind of trade school. The first civil engineering classes were taught in 1877 by an ROTC lieutenant who was paid $400 a year. As the importance of engineering education grew, so did the need for space, and in 1898 the Mechanical Arts Building (later Stout Hall) was constructed, housing Engineering Mechanics, Civil Engineering and the Math Department. In 1909, the State Legislature passed an act providing for a reorganization of the colleges that formed the University. The act replaced the old Industrial College with two offshoots:
    • The College of Engineering and
    • The College of Agriculture
At that time the college had 400 students, and by 1911, its first real home in the Mechanical Engineering Building, which is now Richards Hall. More than three decades later, a chemical engineering wing was added to Avery Hall and in 1958, chemical engineering became a department.

    Introduction
The School of Engineering and Technology offers undergraduate and graduate programs that prepare students for careers in industry. It is one of the largest degree-granting schools at IUPUI, with an enrollment of approximately 2,000 students. All degrees are awarded by Purdue University.
History of the Purdue School of Engineering and Technology
The School of Engineering and Technology was formed in 1972 and is the successor to Purdue University programs that began in Indianapolis in 1940. The first Purdue University courses in the city were defense training courses sponsored by the U.S. Office of Education. After World War II, the curriculum was changed from a certificate to a diploma program. Three technical-institute programs were established: drafting and mechanical technology, electrical technology, and supervision and production technology. Ten students graduated at the first commencement in 1947. Freshman engineering courses were added in 1948; the Bachelor of Science in Engineering degree was first offered in 1969. The School now offers undergraduate and graduate programs leading to Purdue University degrees. Several of the programs have transfer and articulation agreements with a few Indiana colleges and universities as well as international institutions abroad.

Little Juliana reproduction The Stevens family were pioneer engineers, inventors and entrepreneurs whose achievements molded American society and mechanical engineering. Stevens Institute of Technology was founded in 1870 by a bequest in the will of Edwin A. Stevens, son of Colonel John Stevens III. The original trustees determined that Stevens should have a single, rigorous engineering curriculum leading to a baccalaureate degree they designated "Mechanical Engineer." The undergraduate program encompassed most of the then existing and emerging engineering disciplines and was firmly grounded in scientific principles. Stevens first president, Henry Morton, was the founding president of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers and held the group's first meeting on campus in 1880.

    CECS History
Engineering and Computer Science at PSU: A Remarkable Past and Bright Future
Engineers like straight lines, but strategists know they occasionally must hit their target from oblique angles. Using the angles is how PSU created its highly regarded engineering school in Portland. Dr. H. Chik M. Erzurumlu, Dean Emeritus of the PSU College of Engineering and Computer Science (CECS), is a hopeful visionary: "Look at the track record of where we started in the 60's and where the College is now. At this rate, the College promises to be an exciting place for creating the next generation of technology . 1960-1980: Founding, independence and strategic steps The College of Engineering and Computer Science started in 1960 when the Applied Science Department was organized; but, CECS' roots go back to the late 1950s with the start of pre-engineering courses. Early advocates of engineering education at Portland State "knew we couldn't go all the way at once. We had to take it one step at a time," says Dr. Erzurumlu. In the 1960s and 1970s, Oregon companies needing engineering graduates weren't quite sure what they were getting when they hired Portland State Applied Science graduates. "Employers took a chance, and found our students were well educated and valuable," Dr. Erzurumlu says.
