An abridged excerpt from the Society's Transactions In his paper, “The Publication of Works on the History of Engineering and Technology”, published in Transactions, Volume 51, 1979-80, Ian McNeil sets out the scene from the beginning of the last century to 1980. Particularly useful is his bibliography , with its list of significant publications, 1920-1980. The author begins by examining the field at the beginning of the century. Before 1920 there was very little published on this subject, and little evidence of interest on the part of readers or publishers. Dr H W Dickinson was a pioneer of publication in this field, but it was not until the 1920s that the subject began to be widely studied.
Pre 1940
Transactions in 1922. Apart from the publication of the English translation of Mantoux's The Industrial Revolution in the 18th Century The Engineer and Engineering which is not surprising with editors like Loughnan Pendred and J Foster Petree, both prominent members of this Society. The other most prolific writer of the period to get major works into print was a member too, Charles Dollfus, who produced his splendid transport tetralogy between 1934 and 1942 in Paris.

The Newcomen Society is the world's oldest learned society devoted to the study of the history of engineering and technology. The Society is based in London and is concerned with all branches of engineering: civil, mechanical, electrical, structural, aeronautical, marine, chemical and manufacturing. Original research papers are given at regular evening meetings held at the Science Museum in London; these papers are subsequently published in the Transactions of the Newcomen Society . Our Transactions form an extensive archive with a strong academic foundation. Our five branches hold evening meetings, at regional centres. We also organise conferences and visits to places of interest in the UK and abroad. All are most welcome to apply for membership The Newcomen Society

and the students and scholars who have either visited it in Florence or have had reason to come to its Homepage. There is no attempt to provide a full listing of internet resources for the history of science or its many sister disciplines; it is hoped that the sources indicated will give access to that wider world. The Istituto is one of the main centers for those disciplines in Italy and Europe, and it provides several on-line services, including this one. The Museo has an important, specialized collection of scientific instruments and artifacts. Emphasized here, then, are Italian and European sites with related activities or interests. Emphasized also are sites which are the result of concerted efforts on the part of their designers to explore the use of the internet for serious research and teaching, wherever they may be in the world. To our ancestors, such an odd eccentric instant was without significance did not even exist. In inventing the locomotive, Watt and Stevenson were part inventors of time." Aldous Huxley, 1894-1963, British writer "Industrial mana sentient reciprocating engine having a fluctuating output, coupled to an iron wheel revolving with uniform velocity. And then we wonder why this should be the golden age of revolution and mental derangement." Aldous Huxley, 1894-1963, British author, Bruno Rontini's notes, in Time Must Have a Stop "When you see something that is technically sweet, you go ahead and do it and you argue about what to do about it only after you have had your technical success. That is the way it was with the atomic bomb." J. Robert Oppenheimer, 1904-1967, U.S. physicist, In the Matter of J. Robert Oppenheimer, USAEC Transcript of Hearing Before Personnel Security Board
