    BACKISSUES
Editorial board Consulting editors ... Thesaurus index Cybernetics and Human Knowing is a quarterly international multi- and interdisciplinary journal on second order cybernetics and cybersemiotics. The journal is devoted to the new understandings of self-organizing processes of information in human knowing that have arisen through the cybernetics of cybernetics, or second order cybernetics and its relation and relevance to other interdisciplinary approaches such as semiotics (cybersemiotics). This new development within cybernetics is a nondisciplinary approach. Through the concept of self-reference it tries to explore: the meaning of cognition and communication; our understanding of organization and information in human, artificial and natural systems; and our understanding of understanding within the natural and social sciences, humanities, information and library science, and in social practices as design, education, organisation, teaching, therapy, art, management and politics. The journal as such is an autonomous knowledge and communication system, partly affiliated with the American Society for Cybernetics but with editors from many other cybernetic and systems organizations and journals and interested researchers from semiotics. Because of the interdisciplinary character, articles are generally written in such a way that readers from other domains can understand them. Authors from a wide range of disciplines, whose common ground is a passion for interdisciplinary, cybernetic, and semiotic description and explanation, will write with a sensitivity for language that will make their ideas clear and their subject fascinating.

    116. Norbert Wiener Related Links
Generally known as the father of cyborgs . Wiener was the originator of the term cybernetics and part of a group of scientists who originated the field. He was also an MIT mathematician, science fiction author, and designer of an early chessplaying robot.

"The fact that we cannot telegraph the pattern of a man from one place to another seems to be due to technical difficulties, and in particular, to the difficulty of keeping an organism in being during such a radical reconstruction." "We have thus established the basis in man for the simplest element in his communication: namely, the communication of man with man by the immediate use of language, when two men are face to face with one another... this capacity is not intrinsically restricted to the immediate presense of the individual, for we have many means to carry this tool of communication to the ends of the earth."
Norbert Wiener, Pink Floyd, Enigma Links: Norbert Wiener (1894 - 1964)
"Wiener’s work before and during World War II led to the publishing of Cybernetics, or control and communication in the animal and machine in 1948. In it, he described a new way of looking at how the world functioned, based on his research on the way in which information is transmitted and processed. He saw a world that focused on information, not energy; and on digital or numeric processes, not machine or analog. His theories not only laid the foundation for this new field of study, they also largely predicted the future development of computers."

Who is responsible for the tragedy in Darfur? Ingrid Jones asks the right questions.

On her very insightful blog Me and Ophelia , Ingrid Jones has been writing diligently about the Sudan crisis. Today she wrote an extraordinary postwith (seemingly) some of the white anger of outrage that is appropriate to what is happening in Sudan. In reference to a BBC report following the UN donors' meeting for Sudan that "A catastrophe is now unavoidable in Sudan's Darfur region, the United Nations and aid workers say. Some 300,000 people will starve, even if emergency aid is delivered immediately, according to the head of th e United States aid agency."

    Professor of Cybernetics
    University of Reading
Kevin Warwick is Professor of Cybernetics at the University of Reading, UK where he carries out research in artificial intelligence, control and robotics. His favourite topic is pushing back the frontiers of machine intelligence. Kevin began his career by joining British Telecom with whom he spent the next 6 years. At 22 he took his first degree at Aston University followed by a PhD and research post at Imperial College, London. He subsequently held positions at Oxford, Newcastle and Warwick Universities before being offered the Chair at Reading, at the age of 32.
Kevin has published over 300 research papers and his latest paperback In the Mind of the Machines gives a warning of a future in which machines are more intelligent than humans. He has been awarded higher doctorates both by Imperial College and the Czech Academy of Sciences, Prague and has been described (by Gillian Anderson of the X-Files) as Britain’s leading prophet of the robot age. He appears in the 1999 Guinness Book of Records for an Internet robot learning experiment and in the 2002 edition for his Cyborg research.
In 1998 he shocked the international scientific community by having a silicon chip transponder surgically implanted in his left arm. A series of further implant experiments have taken place in which Kevin’s nervous system was linked to a computer. This research led to him being featured in February 2000, as the cover story on the US magazine wired. Kevin also presented the Year 2000 Royal Institution Christmas Lectures with great success. Kevin's new implant experiment called 'Project Cyborg' got underway in March 2002 and is providing exciting results.
