O ur main project involves the evaluation of an improved manifold for the creation of multivalent, multispecific or multifunctional antibody derivatives, in order to obtain recombinant antibody-based anti-cancer reagents. The ultimate goal is to evaluate new opportunities to immunotherapeutic approaches using recombinant antibody derivatives. We also develop technology to further improve the chance on successful heterologous expression in E. coli, especially cytokines. Jack G. Mottley
Associate Professor of Electrical Engineering
Ph.D., Washington University in Saint Louis, 1985 Key Words:
quantitative ultrasonic tissue and materials characterization, biomedical ultrasound, anisotropy of ultrasonic parameters, contractile-state-dependence of ultrasonic parameters, ultrasonic contrast agents
Finger: Knowledge of the way in which ultrasound propagates in a medium can be used to gain insight into the internal structure of that material. Reliable measurements of ultrasonic properties are difficult to perform and interpret. The goals of my research are to develop realistic models of the interaction of ultrasound with inhomogeneous media and to construct measurement systems based on quantifiable ultrasonic parameters. Some of the specific projects needed to achieve those goals are identified below:
Anisotropy of Ultrasonic Parameters
Many materials, such as muscle tissues and many man-made composite materials, exhibit structures which are organized into aligned fibers. The presence of these fibers give rise to angular dependencies, or anisotropy, in the ultrasonic properties of these media, a fact which can be exploited to obtain additional information on the internal structure of the material.
Contractile-State-Dependence of Ultrasonic Parameters
The ultrasonic parameters of muscle tissues change between contraction and relaxation. These variations can also be exploited to gain information about the condition of the tissue, information which may be of great use to physicians when making diagnoses and prognoses.

"A logical development of the subject...all the important theorems and results are discussed in terms of simple worked examples. The student's understanding...is tested by problems at the end of each subsection, and every chapter ends with exercises."
Current Science (Review of the First Edition)
This second edition includes substantial revisions, new material on minimal polynomials and diagonilization as well as a variety of new applications. New Semiconcave Functions, Hamilton-Jacobi Equations, and Optimal Control This text is the first comprehensive exposition of the theory of semiconcave functions, and of the role they play in optimal control and HamiltonJacobi equations. The first part covers the general theory, encompassing all key results and illustrating them with significant examples. The latter part is devoted to applications concerning the Bolza problem in calculus of variations and optimal exit time problems for nonlinear control systems. New Mathematical Analysis Approximation and Discrete Processes This work embraces a broad range of topics in analysis at the graduate level, requiring only a sound knowledge of calculus and the functions of one variable. A key feature of this lively yet rigorous and systematic exposition is the historical accounts of ideas and methods pertaining to the relevant topics. Most interesting and useful are the connections developed between analysis and other mathematical disciplines, in this case, numerical analysis and probability theory.
