Biomedical Engineering at Michigan Tech Biomedical Engineering at Michigan Tech Welcome to the Michigan Tech Department of Biomedical Engineering web site. The department was established in the fall of 1998 through a $1million Whitaker Foundation grant. Currently, the department has four (4) full-time Ph.D. professors encompassing the research areas of Biomaterials, Bioinstrumentation, Biomechanics, Human Physiology, and medical heat and mass transfer. Biomedical Engineering has been a popular discipline on the Michigan Tech campus for nearly 20 years. The department currently has over 180 enrolled undergraduate students and has seen explosive growth in recent years. Active research is also being carried out with faculty in the department advising graduate students in other disciplines and undergraduates in Biomedical Engineering. What is Biomedical Engineering?

RA/TA/Postdoc Positions WELCOME TO BIOMEDICAL ENGINEERING AT UC DAVIS Biomedical Engineering (BME) at UC Davis is a campus-wide program with a thirty year history, integrating the efforts of fifty faculty members in many Departments. The UCD BME program has a tremendous breadth of research in the life sciences and engineering, involving the Schools of Medicine and Veterinary Medicine, the College of Engineering, the College of Letters and Science, the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, and a leading Division of Biological Sciences. Students in Biomedical Engineering draw from the many research resources available on the UCD campus, as well as the biomedical and biotechnology industry located within Northern California. Graduate education is organized as an inter-departmental graduate group. Both the MS and PhD degrees in Biomedical Engineering are currently offered. Tracks for graduate study coincide with the areas of major research activities at UCD, and include: bioinformatics biomedical imaging cellular and molecular engineering microsystems engineering ... musculoskeletal biomechanics ; and therapeutics Undergraduate education in biomedical engineering began in the Fall of 2002. The four-year Bachelor of Science in Biomedical Engineering has been approved and will emphasize bio-molecular engineering and bioinformatics. An undergraduate minor in biomedical engineering will soon be available to other students within the College of Engineering.

Nature of the Work Employment Job Outlook Earnings ... Sources of Additional Information
Nature of the Work About this section Back to Top By combining biology and medicine with engineering, biomedical engineers develop devices and procedures that solve medical and health-related problems. Many do research, along with life scientists, chemists, and medical scientists, to develop and evaluate systems and products for use in the fields of biology and health, such as artificial organs, prostheses (artificial devices that replace missing body parts), instrumentation, medical information systems, and health management and care delivery systems. (See biological scientists medical scientists , and chemists and materials scientists elsewhere in the Handbook .) Biomedical engineers design devices used in various medical procedures, such as the computers used to analyze blood or the laser systems used in corrective eye surgery. They develop artificial organs, imaging systems such as magnetic resonance, ultrasound, and x-ray, and devices for automating insulin injections or controlling body functions. Most engineers in this specialty require a sound background in one of the basic engineering specialties, such as mechanical or electronics engineering, in addition to specialized biomedical training. Some specialties within biomedical engineering include biomaterials, biomechanics, medical imaging, rehabilitation engineering, and orthopedic engineering.

GENERAL INFORMATION Work on the development and using of radiophysical methods in medicine were begun in the Radiophysical Research Institute (NIRFI) by V.A.Zverev with staff as far back as 60-th years. As an independent structure the division of Radiophysical Methods in Medicine had been organized in 1973 and M.T.Grekhova had became the first head of the division. In 1977 the division had been included in the newly organized Institute of Applied Physics. Since 1987 till 1999 the division was headed by V.A.Antonets and since 1999 it is headed by A.D.Mansfeld. Three labs have been organized in the division: "Laboratory of Vibrational Diagnostics", "Laboratory of Ultrasonic Diagnostics" and " Laboratory of Autowave Processes ". In 2001 the last laboratory was cleaved into the self-dependent section. The division has now 20 employees including 2 D.Sc., 5 Ph.D. and 2 Ph.D. students. A series of new vibroacoustical methods to study the human body and human physiological systems are developing now within the framework of the direction "radiophysics in medicine". These are acousto-optical tomography, acousto-termometric tomography, spectral tremorography

Exciting advances in medicine, such as the artificial heart, pacemakers, medical imaging (MRI, ultrasound, CT scans), lasers, prosthetic implants, life support systems and helping the paralyzed to walk are often times the result of a team effort by engineers and physicians. Biomedical engineering is firmly based in engineering and in the life sciences. It integrates medicine and engineering in the efforts against illness and disease by providing appropriate products, tools, and techniques for research, diagnosis, and treatment by health care professionals.
    The Program
Biomedical engineering is an interdisciplinary field with course work in engineering and life sciences. Biomedical engineers work with other health care professionals as members of a team. Employment opportunities for biomedical engineers exist in industry, government, universities, medical schools and hospitals.
