Ultrasound Artefacts
In diagnostic ultrasound "artefact" is used for image phenomenons, that represent the real anatomical structure not correctly. An artefact can be defined as false, multiple or misleading information introduced by the imaging system or by interaction of ultrasound with the adjacent tissue. But in the case of medical diagnosis its appearance can be of diagnostic advantage also !
In general image artefacts can occur in each medical ultrasound. Then an interpretation of the image is complicated and can eliminate the structural information of objects looking for. Artefacts do occur due to some simple assumptions of the ultrasound propagation after generating in an imaging system. Without these assumptions developing of ultrasound imaging systems could not have been done. These assumptions are :
  • Propagation of ultrasound is straight ahead.
The ultrasound beam is infinite thin in its lateral and thickness direction.
In tissue the sound velocity is homogeneous and constant (around 1540 m/s).
The detected echo is originated by the last generated sound pulse.

In a partnership of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the Foundation for the National Institutes of Health, and the Whitaker Foundation, a Biomedical Engineering Summer Internship Program(BESIP) is being offered at the NIH. This ten week summer program (June 11 through August 17, 2001) allows undergraduate biomedical engineering students to participate, under the mentorship of world class scientists in cutting edge biomedical research projects in NIH laboratories in Bethesda, Maryland. Please note: the BESIP is separate program from the NIH Summer Internship Program (SIP) in Biomedical Research. Selected by a nationwide competition, the twelve to sixteen interns will have the opportunity to indicate preferences from a list of available NIH projects that involve areas of engineering or physical science expertise. The students will participate in group meetings, attend planned lectures and laboratory visits, and be encouraged to submit posters to the NIH Poster Day where summer interns from all disciplines present their projects. A listing of the projects that were offered last year can be found at Projects 2000 A listing of interns and their mentors for the Class of 1999 and Class of 2000 Go to the home page for: For questions about the Internship Program, contact

Please read our Mission/ Objectives and Outcomes pages. You are welcome to SEARCH our site. T he undergraduate curriculum can serve as a pre-medical program, as preparation for graduate school and as preparation for careers in biomedical engineering and related health fields. Double-major programs with electrical engineering and with chemical engineering are available. This program is accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology and students receive the Bachelor of Engineering degree. There are several opportunities for summer research or internships available through the department also. T he graduate program prepares students for research and advanced practice in biomedical engineering. The department offers courses of study leading to the M.S. and Ph.D. degrees. The department collaborates with the School of Medicine in the M.D./Ph.D. program (Medical Scientist Training Program) and the School of Nursing in the MSN/Ph.D. program. Vanderbilt University administers a training grant from the National Institutes of Health that provides financial support for pre-doctoral students in quantitative and integrative physiology.
