Stem Cell Control

Researchers have discovered a potentially powerful tool for controlling whether bone marrow stem cells grow into skin, fat, bone, or other cell types. Knee Cartilage Regrows With an eye toward reducing the need for knee replacement surgery, biomedical engineers have created a dual purpose scaffold that cushions a damaged joint while providing the support that cartilage cells need to generate new tissue. Investigator Directory The keyword-searchable directory of Whitaker investigators has been updated with new contact information on hundreds of research grant recipients. The database lists more than 1,400 biomedical engineers. Students Shun Science U.S. preeminence in science and technology is being threatened by a lack of student interest, according to the National Science Board. Grant Overviews Wrap-ups of four major grant programs have been posted to the site: Research Grants Graduate Fellowships Industrial Internships , and Teaching Materials Guarding the Milk Supply?

World Congress on Medical Physics and Biomedical Engineering August 24-29, 2003 WC2003 is now over.
Thanks to all who made it a great success! We have had a number of requests asking how to reference papers published in the CD-ROM proceedings. To make matters easier we have provided below a page that lists all authors and the paper titles and paper reference numer on the CD-ROM.
We have also include a link to abstracts/conference proceedings. Go here A list of selected presentations from the Diagnostic Imaging (Track 1) have been collated by Don McLean. They are available here Some pictures from the opening ceremony are available here A full author list is available here
Details of upcoming EPSM conferences are available here
It is possible to construct a personalised program of talks you are interested in. Full details here
An abstract book will not be produced for this Congress, however a comprehensive CD-Rom publication containing abstracts and 4-paged papers will be distributed. It is recommended that you print abstracts from this system, in your home country, as there will not be printing facilities available onsite. A Program book (without full abstracts will be provided).

    Biomedical Engineering - UC Irvine
Welcome to the Department of Biomedical Engineering. The growth of this discipline at UCI has been very rapid beginning with the formation of the Center for Biomedical Engineering in 1998. The Center was funded by a generous $3 million Development Award from the Whitaker Foundation to accelerate the growth of the formal educational and research opportunities in the Henry Samueli School of Engineering . In 2002, three major milestones were achieved including the formation of the Department of Biomedical Engineering, two undergraduate degree programs , and the expansion of the graduate program leading to the M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in biomedical engineering.
