Winners in each category receive a $1,000 scholarship and an internship. Internships
Scholarship winners will be placed in summer internship programs, which will be finalized by early 2003. Scholarship winners and interns receive: a $500 stipend to offset housing costs during their internship; $250 toward travel expenses to the Milwaukee convention in the summer of 2004; waived convention fees and housing at the host hotel. Interns will share rooms as part of the networking opportunity. We can not accommodate guests. Those wishing to room with family or friends forfeit the housing benefit. Eligibility

Search this site: June 06, 2004 Ronald Wilson Reagan 1911-2004 America wanted a Triple Crown winner so bad it could taste it and bet it. Philadelphia's Smarty Jones went off at 2-5 and left as another beaten favorite. Ron Indrisano has the story of Birdstone's improbable win in the stretch run at the Belmont Stakes. Bob Ryan is sad because for this one time a 36 to 1 underdog could not capture his imagination as Smarty Jones did. John Powers explains the disppointment of many horse racing fans on Belmont Sunday. There is a classic photo with that one. The Red Sox bats exploded last night in Kansas City. But the big news was that the Red Sox got some good starting pitching for a change. It shouldn't suprise anyone that it came from team ace, Curt Schilling. Bob Hohler Michael Silverman and Steven Krasner have game stories on the Sox 8-4 win.

Manny's Last Blast Main Sports Final Steve Burton Interview with Ty Law May 23, 2004 Bullpen Domination The Sox increased their lead to 1.5 games last night keeping the game close and leaving it up to a battle of the bullpens. Manny Ramirez hit another towering shot to tie it up at 2 in the sixth and the Sox then feasted on a lame Blue Jays bullpen. Of course, the Sox bullpen, as often is the case, shut down the Jays in the 5-2 win. Nick Cafardo Jeff Horrigan , and Steven Krasner have game stories. Marvin Pave tells us about the winning debut of Anastacio Martinez. Rich Thompson tells us that Pedro Martinez was very happy to have fellow Dominican Anastacio Martinez pick him up in the seventh. Thompson also has Terry Francona explaining his restraint in resisting the temptation to let Pedro stay in for one more innning. John Connolly lets us know that Mark Bellhorn had the game winning hit last night and he seems to be getting hot.

Masculinity and Sports Media Recent studies on gender and sports media find that sports commentary reinforces perceptions of "violent masculinity." By praising athletes who continue to play while injured, and by using language of conflict and war to describe action, sports commentary reinforces violence and aggression as exciting and rewarding behaviour. Sports broadcasts focus heavily on violence in professional sports, often replaying and over-analyzing footage of graphic injuries, accidents and fights. A 1999 Children Now study points out that conflict between players of opposing teams is often created or inflated to promote upcoming games. The studies conclude that this focus on personal rivalry, conflict, and fierce competition reinforces the social attitude that violence and aggression are normal and natural expressions of masculine identity.

Media Stereotyping - Introduction But stereotypes can be problematic. They can:
  • reduce a wide range of differences in people to simplistic categorizations
transform assumptions about particular groups of people into "realities"
be used to justify the position of those in power
    perpetuate social prejudice and inequality
More often than not, the groups being stereotyped have little to say about how they are represented. This section comments on common media stereotypes and examines some of the root causes of stereotypical portrayals, including lack of diversity behind the scenes in newsrooms and film studios. The section explores the impact of stereotyping on self-image and the development of attitudes among the young, and it showcases efforts to counter stereotyping with alternative programming. It also outlines diversity guidelines for the broadcasting industry, as well as government policies to promote fair and equitable portrayals in Canadian media. For further information and research, each of the sub-topic sections below also offers a continually updated selection of pertinent articles, reports, surveys, statistics, and Web sites.
