The information center of the 1994 Lillehammer Olympics was the first to make competition results available on the Internet. The organizing committees for the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City , the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens , and the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin all have home pages on the World Wide Web; archived versions of the official Sydney 2000 Summer Olympics website are available via PANDORA , a service of the National Library of Australia. The available information, such as schedules and venues of events, ticket information, and suggestions for lodging, can vary daily and can increase greatly as the individual games approach. Other websites can be located using standard Internet search engines.

Using Library of Congress Subject Headings
Library of Congress Subject Headings (LCSH) are a part of the Library of Congress Classification, a system of grouping books with similar topics. Subject headings are those words assigned to books that describe what the book is about. You can use the Library of Congress Subject Headings to help choose appropriate words or subject headings to search in the Online Catalog , and other electronic databases Suppose that you are writing a paper about sports. Look up "sports" in the Library of Congress Subject Headings books, located by any UM library information desk. You will see this: Sports (May Subd Geog) UF Field sports Pastimes Recreations BT Recreation RT Athletics Games Outdoor life Physical education and training SA subdivision Sports under military services, e.g., United States. Army Sports; and under ethnic groups NA Aeronautical sports Age and sports Aquatic sports Ball games [etc...]
    Translation:
  • "May Subd Geog" (next to the word "Sports") stands for "may be subdivided geographically." In other words, it might be possible to search specifically for aquatic sports in California, for example. This subject search could be done in the Catalog by keying in the terms "aquatic sports California."

Several East Bay schools will drop sports programs beginning in fall. Discussion SCHOOL CUTS TALK BACK: Suggest Alternatives To The School Budget Dilemma
The West Contra Costa school district has approved $16.5 million in budget cuts to avoid bankruptcy. The board voted to eliminate high school sports, libraries, and some jobs within the school system. Beginning in the fall semester, there will be no district-funded athletics at El Cerrito, Hercules, Richmond, Pinole Valley, DeAnza and Kennedy High Schools. The school board vote was 5-1 in favor of the cuts. The single dissenting vote was from the high school student who sits on the board. The board will also close all school libraries, eliminate elementary music programs and stop funding the district's radio station.
