Division of Recreational Sports The university also facilitated the operation of over 20 club sports organizations which involved some 500 men and women.
http://wiscinfo.doit.wisc.edu/recsports/intramurals/im_history.htm
The inception of the intramural activities at Wisconsin was noted as early as 1893 upon completion of the Armory Gymnasium on Langdon Street. Interclass and inter-college participation in baseball, contact football, gymnastics, and track and field existed in the early 1900's under the direction of various physical education department staff members. The period of 1910-1920 marked the first dramatic increase in intramural activities. Inter-fraternity swimming contests marked the beginning of competition between Greek organizations. All-university competition was to follow and in 1920, a staff of seventeen members, directed by the program's first intramural director, George Berg, conducted an expanding program of activities which involved not only the students but faculty and staff members as well. An administrative reorganization of the intercollegiate and physical education divisions in the early 1930's prompted the appointment of Art Thomsen as coordinator of intramurals in the fall of 1932. This new administration sought to arouse interest among independent students, and by 1937 the number of independent teams had grown form 3 in 1932 to 71. Fifteen different activities were offered in 1936-37, with rowing, volleyball, handball and badminton being the most popular additions. Expectedly, the advent of World War II caused intramural participation to drop drastically, with less than 2,500 male students in attendance at Wisconsin. Immediately after the war, 1946-47, the enrollment of male students reached an all time high. As a result, the intramural program underwent some significant changes, both physically and structurally. Acreage was obtained on the west campus for outdoor activities, while program activities were administered under the new title of Intramural-Recreation: INtramurals, representing structured competition leading to championships, and recreation signifying the informal, free play phase of participation. Total participation accelerated again with the opening of Gym Unit II in 1967, and further expansion of outdoor areas. This increase was accompanied by a large increase in the number of women participants.

Team makes its way into Chico sports history Takeshi Isaka
Staff Writer May 19, 2004
Soccer excites people all over the world and Chico is no exception. As one of the longest running and oldest soccer teams in California, the Chico Rooks has been promoting and contributing to soccer's high level of entertainment to the North Valley on and off the field for more than 11 years. David Stahl, now in his 12th year as the Rooks' head coach, said the Rooks have compiled a winning record of 167-86-3 in 11 seasons and advanced to the playoffs every year. Before Major League Soccer kicked off its first season, Stahl said they wanted to have a soccer team to compete with teams of bigger metropolitan areas like Sacramento or San Francisco and to establish a quality soccer program in Chico. "The reason for that it is because of Chico, the town. This is a soccer town," said Rick Sorenson, executive director of sponsorships and adult services. "Because Chico has been a university town, people from all over the world came to Chico and they played soccer. Chico has been prominent in the soccer community for 30 years."

Golf at the University of Michigan
(Golf was selected as an example, similar papers could be done on any of the men's or women's sports.) Golf was first organized as a varsity sport in 1901 under the instigation of Prof. Thomas Trueblood but golf did not become a conference sport until 1922. From 1922-1950 Michigan had one of the best golf records in the Big Ten and produced several outstanding players. Since then the teams have posted mediocre records, with a few exceptions. There has been virtually nothing written about golf, men's or women's, at the U of M beyond the short sketch by Les Etter in the Encyclopedic Survey. The story of the university golf course, designed by Alistair McKenzie and in its day considered one of the finest college courses in the nation, has also been neglected. This paper would have to rely heavily on newspaper coverage in the Daily and possibly the Ann Arbor News.
