Dr. Michael Augspurger Amerikanistik Lehrstuhl The American Picaresque (Proseminar) Do. 14-16, PT 2.0.3.A The picaresque is not originally an American genre, yet for many authors it has provided an apt form for exploring the vast size and variety of American society, as well as the many disjuntions between the idealized America and the real United States: in the never-ending search for America, the wandering and roguish hero of the picaresque has had as much success as any. In this course, we will read a series of picaresque novels as a way to understand both how authors have manipulated the genre to serve their own artistic, social, and political needs and how these different thinkers have imagined key relationships in American society between its pluralism and its unity, between its pragmatism and idealism, between its wealth and poverty, between its freedoms and its restrictions. For more than 25 years, the San Jose State University Phyllis Forward Simpkins International House has provided a warm, fun and friendly environment for overseas students adjusting to life in a foreign land, according to both residents and staff. Click here for slide show Often referred to as the "I-House," the flag-decorated building at 360 S. Eleventh St., which houses 70 students, has been in service since Allan and Phyllis Simpkins bought, remodeled and furnished it in 1978. The house's 25th anniversary was celebrated in July 2003. "International House is just a really warm, friendly place to live," said Leann Cherkasky Makhni, director of the International House. "We provide a lot of support to students, and they get to meet people from all over the world."

02/01/2001 - Updated 03:01 AM ET Classes share cultures and perspectives By Tracey Wong Briggs, USA TODAY Lisa Arnold uses music to teach multicultural appreciation at an elementary school that serves as an "English as a Second Language" center in Sioux City, Iowa. Norm Conard has students make multicultural projects to learn tolerance and diversity at an all-white high school in rural Uniontown, Kan. Since being named to the All-USA Teacher First Team in October, the two have had their students exchange videotapes of themselves and their classes, and Arnold is helping four of Conard's students on a documentary in a collaboration to share cultures, perspectives and ideas. Read more Stories "Multicultural issues are what tie us together," says Arnold, whose music programs have helped foster cultural understanding at Riverview Elementary School, which has gone from 5% to 58% minority in six years as Sioux City has experienced an influx of immigration. Arnold journeyed to Uniontown High in December to help four of Conard's social studies students with a documentary they're filming on Huddie "Leadbelly" Ledbetter, the blues pioneer. Beyond serving as an expert consultant and putting the students in touch with music experts, Arnold took home a few ideas on how to make book learning come alive.

Soccer and American Exceptionalism

Introduction [HTML] or [PDF format] Soccer is the world's favorite pastime, a passion for billions around the globe. In the United States, however, the sport is a distant also-ran behind football, baseball, basketball, and hockey. Why is America an exception? And why, despite America's leading role in popular culture, does most of the world ignore American sports in return? Offside is the first book to explain these peculiarities, taking us on a thoughtful and engaging tour of America's sports culture and connecting it with other fundamental American exceptionalisms. In so doing, it offers a comparative analysis of sports cultures in the industrial societies of North America and Europe. The authors argue that when sports culture developed in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, nativism and nationalism were shaping a distinctly American self-image that clashed with the non-American sport of soccer. Baseball and football crowded out the game. Then poor leadership, among other factors, prevented soccer from competing with basketball and hockey as they grew. By the 1920s, the United States was contentedly isolated from what was fast becoming an international obsession. The book compares soccer's American history to that of the major sports that did catch on. It covers recent developments, including the hoopla surrounding the 1994 soccer World Cup in America, the creation of yet another professional soccer league, and American women's global preeminence in the sport. It concludes by considering the impact of soccer's growing popularity as a recreation, and what the future of sports culture in the country might say about U.S. exceptionalism in general.
