Bissinger, Friday Night Lights Bernard Malamud, The Natural Course Packet Course Description Sports in the United States is linked inextricably to the larger social scene. On their various playing fields, athletesand fans and critics, tooperform their identities, wrestle over cultural ideals, and tackle social issues (perhaps nothing demonstrates this connection between sports and society more than Americans' oft-noted love of sports metaphors). In this course, we will explore the ways in which sports express and affect larger social discussions and issues. What does it mean to be a good sport? What is achievement? Who should we admire? Who should be allowed to take part in public rituals? Exploring the world of American sport, we will try to understand how different Americans have answered these and other fundamental social questions. Expectations Your grade will depend on active class participation (including leading discussion on one day) and weekly (approximately 10) response essays in English (1-2 pages each). These weekly assignments will include both traditional essay responses to the reading, as well as some less traditional writing assignments. These will not be accepted late, although I will accept an email submission that arrives before class starts, even if you are not in class, and I will also drop one of these grades.
