Role
The general role of a coach is essentially that of helping athletes to achieve their aims in sport. Elements of that role include not only teaching, but also learning . Coaching is always a ‘two-way street’. Other elements of the role depend on where the coach fits within the framework of the particular organization and how much support is available. Style Style characterises the degree of formality with which a coach behaves or reacts. Personality and underlying motivation form the basis of coaching style. Different tasks (eg coaching of tactics v addressing a group) necessitate variation of inherent style to suit the circumstances. Demands Coaches require competency at the coaching process , and an adequate knowledge of their sport and the physical and mental demands it makes on players. They should be good communicators, remembering that effective teaching involves more than mere ‘telling’. They should thoroughly appreciate the techniques of their sport, and be able to guide their clients into replicating them. They should have completed the qualifying requirements of coaches of the sport. Australia Canada New Zealand United Kingdom and USA have outlined their requirements on the web.

Coaching
The crucial contribution of coaching is not confined to elite athletes. Coaches at all levels must be valued whether in the school playground, the local club or at major international events. Coaches are people who motivate, encourage and inspire. Without them most performers would fail to reach their full potential. Coaching is central to the development of sport at every level In March 2001, the Government published its Plan for Sport. Following this a Coaching Task Force was established to review the role of coaching. The Task Force report was published in July 2002 and the Government has committed £28m over the next three years to implement its key recommendations. A Coaching Project Board is overseeing this process. The proposals will tackle the shortage of coaches, both professional and voluntary, and recognise coaching as a profession, with accredited qualifications and a real career-development structure. For further information on coaching and to request future updates as they happen please email: coaching@culture.gsi.gov.uk

Two others Concordia tracksters, Loveth Anyanwu and Rick Hutchins were very close at the last meets, along with Bishop Sparks, who needed to attend military basic training at the same time as nationals, but they will need to join a strong recruiting class and other strong returnees to gear up for the 2004-05 campaign. This is Amanda's second national meet appearance this school year, having raced at cross country nationals in November.
