Rosalind Franklin Born: Major discipline: Physical Chemistry Died: Minor discipline:
Physical chemist Rosalind Franklin carried out ground-breaking studies on the crystal structure of DNA, the molecule of life, which contains an individual's genetic code. Rosalind Franklin was born in London, England on July 25, 1920, the second of five children of Ellis and Muriel Waley Franklin. Attending St. Paul's Girls' School, she decided to become a scientist. At the age of 18, she began studies at Newham College, a women's college in Cambridge, and graduated in 1941. The following year she worked with Ronald Norrish, a physical chemist who would later win the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1967. From 1942 to 1946, Franklin worked for the British Coal Utilization Research Association, where she discovered the structural changes that occur when coals and charcoals are heated, thus explaining why some carbons form graphite under these conditions. For this work, she earned her Ph.D. from Cambridge in 1945, established her reputation as research chemist, and laid the groundwork for a new areahigh-strength carbon fibers.

... Hunger Studies Health Consequences of Hunger Hunger and undernutrition contribute to a number of negative health consequences: A joint analysis released by the Center on Hunger and Poverty at Brandeis University and the Food Research and Action Center (FRAC) shows how hunger and obesity not only pose separate and distinct health risks, but also can co-exist in the same household. According to FRAC's survey of families living below 185 percent of poverty the Community Childhood Hunger Identification Project (CCHIP) hungry children suffer from two to four times as many individual health problems, such as unwanted weight loss, fatigue, headaches, irritability, inability to concentrate and frequent colds, as low-income children whose families do not experience food shortages. This relationship between hunger and health problems was unaffected by income. In other words, hunger had a strong effect on children's health no matter what the income level of their families. According to CCHIP, hungry children are more likely to be ill and absent from school.

The Institute for Biodiversity and Ecosystem Dynamics (IBED) was founded in 2000 by the Faculty of Science as a response to some of the major challenges to modern science. These challenges are to understand man-made as well as natural global change and their impact on biodiversity. A truly integrated approach is required to meet these challenges, covering the full complexity of the interactions between living organisms and their physical and chemical environment
IBED's main fieldwork areas are in Northwest and Southern Europe, Central and South America. IBED is responsible for two interuniversity Research Schools (Biodiversity and ICG) and participates in two other schools (SENSE and Functional Ecology). Contact IBED
