Philosophy 151 - Philosophy of Sport
MW 8:40-9:55am. T.J. Berry
Syllabus
This course examines philosophical issues that arise in sport. The course is divided into three parts. In the first part, we consider the nature of sport and how we can demarcate sport from other human pursuits. Do high altitude mountaineering, Olympic figure skating, and track and field share some feature(s) that an activity like chess lacks? The second part concerns ethical issues that arise in sport. Is winning everything in sport? Ought one to seek competitive advantage by violating the rules? Ought one to accept competitive advantage resulting from errors by judging officials? In the third part, we consider issues concerning the integration of sport into society. Ought there to be gender equity in sport, and if so, how ought we to judge that such equity has been achieved? What does the academic mission of institutions of higher education imply about the proper role of athletics within those institutions?

International Conference on PHILOSOPHY OF SPORT November, 19-21 2003 LJUBLJANA
SLOVENIJA
You can get information about accomodation here! Dear colleagues and friends of sport, We kindly invite you to participate at the International Conference on Philosophy of Sport The Philosophy of Sport is being recognized as an important foundation discipline of sport sciences. It relates to other segments of scientific studies of sport and a critical awareness of sport in society more generally, and addresses important and unavoidable questions concerning the contemporary sports world. International organizations such as UNESCO and IOC have raised awareness of some highly problematic sport issues, which philosophy of sport is by its very nature competent to deal with. Most particularly in contemporary sport a range of ethical dilemmas such as doping, child abuse, excessive commercialization and politicization have captured the public imagination and the attention of serious scholars. In addition, however, the Philosophers of Sport seems well placed to evaluate and compare sports trends and top achievements together with all accompanying phenomena. The Faculty of Sport and the Faculty of Arts at the University of Ljubljana, together with the Slovenian Association for the Philosophy of Sport call for the submission of abstracts to be considered for presentation at the conference. The conference will take place at the Faculty of Sport in Ljubljana, Slovenia, from Wednesday, November 19th to Friday, November 21st. More details about the conference will follow in the upcoming newsletters.
