    The Olympic Games Quilts
There was a very special quilt show in Atlanta in the spring of 1996. It was the display, at the Nicholson Gallery of the Atlanta History Center, of almost 400 quilts made in honor of the Centennial Olympic Games held here that year. The show, entitled "The Olympic Games Quilts, America's Welcome to the World," continued through May 19. It was the result of an effort organized by the Georgia Quilt Project four years ago, shortly after the Barcelona Olympics. That group, formed in the 1980s to document the state's quilts and quilters, wanted to find a way to commemorate, through quilts, the first Olympic Games to be held in the South. Working with the Atlanta Committee for the Olympic Games (ACOG), the Quilt Project proposed that the quilters of Georgia make a gift of quilts to the athletes and the Olympic organizers of each of the nearly 200 countries participating in the Atlanta Olympics. Two quilts would be presented to each country one to the athlete who serves as the flagbearer for the nation in the opening ceremonies, and the other to that country's Olympic committee. The JPEG images on this page are snapshots I made when visiting the show in the Spring of 1996. Clicking on the images will bring up a larger version of the image shown. The quilts were not hung in such a way that all of them could be seen, so these are not meant to be documentary photos, but just to give the flavor of this remarkable quilt show. The program/catalogue for the exhibit is a 144-page book in the large-format style of quilt books entitled

days until the 2002 Winter Olympic Games The Salt Lake City 2002 Winter Olympics will take place from February 8th to February 24th 2002. The Paralympics will take place in Salt Lake City from March 7th to March 16th 2002. The International Olympic Committee awarded the 2002 Olympics to Salt Lake City on June 16th 1995 at Budapest, Hungary. With 15 sports being competed the 2002 Olympics will have more events than any previous winter games. Of special interest, an event from the annals of Winter Olympic History - the Skeleton will be reintroduced after several generations' absence. For the first time Women's Bobsleigh will be a medal event. The Salt Lake City Olympic Committee is planning for the participation of approximately 2,345 athletes and 1,800 officials from 80 countries - plus the opening and closing ceremonies. A world television audience of over two billion people is anticipated. Of particular impact will be the contribution of over 26,000 volunteers involved in pre-game organization and the games themselves. It would be hard to find a place more suited to hosting the Winter Olympics than Salt Lake City. The city's stunning setting - surrounded by the Rocky Mountain peaks of the Wasatch Front, that seem close enough to touch - would be reason enough to hold the Olympics here. But there is much more to Salt Lake than magnificent scenery. Obviously the proximity of mountains with outstanding conditions makes it perfect for a variety of winter sports

"The various 'tent' and 'umbrella' roof erected at Munich were the culmination of Otto's many years' experience. Earlier examples had indicated the potential of such temporary but economical large-span structures. But at Munich the scale was tremendous, involving the erection and linking of varied amoeba-shaped tents: the major areas covered included the main stadium, on one side only, linked to the arena and the swimming area, both wholly covered. The roof covering the main stadium consisted of a PVC-coated polyester fabric suspended on hangers independent of the cable net. The supporting masts held the main cables in tension, thus providing the necessary support for hanging roof areas." Resources Sources on Olympic Games Tent Long-Span Structures ", by Angus J. MacDonald, ArchitectureWeek No. 139, 2003.0326, pB1.2.

    Women and the Olympic Games
The ancient Olympic Games certainly marginalized the female sex. Pausanias relates the story of Callipateira , who dressed up as a trainer in order to see her son compete. He adds that when she inadvertently revealed her true identity in her excitement at seeing her son win, the Greeks were concerned enough by the breach of protocol to insitute a new rule requiring trainers as well as athletes to strip before entering the stadium . However, a female presence remained a strong undercurrent at Olympia . Although married women like Callipateira were forbidden to watch the Games , maidens could attend. And the Olympic rules did provide an exception for one married woman, the priestess of Demeter , who received honored seating by the altar in the stadium.
    The Heraea Games
In fact, Olympia even offered an opportunity for female athletes to compete. The Heraea Games , administered by the Sixteen Women and other married women for maiden competitors, took place every four years. According to

    Wilma Rudolph
Track and Field Athlete Wilma Rudolph was the first American woman runner to win three gold medals in the Olympic games. Her performance was all the more remarkable in light of the fact that she had double pneumonia and scarlet fever as a young child and could not walk without braces until age 11. Rudolph was born on June 23, 1940, in St. Bethlehem, Tennessee, the 17th of 19 children, and soon moved with her family to Clarksville. At an early age, she survived polio and scarlet fever, only to be left with the use of one leg. Through daily leg massages administered in turn by different members of her family, she progressed to the point where she was able walk only with the aid of a special shoe. Three years later, however, she discarded the shoe, and began joining her brother in backyard basketball games. At Burt High School in Clarksville, while a sophomore, Rudolph broke the state basketball record for girls. As a sprinter, she was undefeated in all of her high school track meets. In 1957, Rudolph enrolled at Tennessee State University and began setting her sights for the Olympic games in Rome. In the interim, she gained national recognition in collegiate meets, setting the world record for 2000 meters in July of 1960. In the Olympics, she earned the title of the "World's Fastest Woman" by winning gold medals for the 100-meter dash, the 200-meter dash (Olympic record), and for anchoring the 400-meter relay (world record). She was named by the Associated Press as the U.S. Female Athlete of the Year for 1960, and also won United Press Athlete of the Year honors.
