Call me a cynic, I accept there will be individual success stories, but I do not see how they will be fully eradicated. There will always an incentive to cheat in sport. The professional era has seen to that. A study conducted before the Sydney Olympics showed an amazing 52 percent of world-class athletes admitted they would take a pill that would make them invincible. And they said they would do it with the prior knowledge that it would eventually lead to their deaths. The drugs testers seem to be on the brink of a rare victory. Since the discovery of the designer steroid THG the cheats are on the run.

Download PDF One of the most exciting sports stories in recent years was the attempt to break Roger Maris’s single-season home run record in baseball. On September 8, 1998, Mark McGwire of the St. Louis Cardinals made history by hitting his sixty-second home run. The popular McGwire, who finished the season with seventy home runs, was widely celebrated for his feat.
Some sports events and organizations have banned the use of certain drugs and have implemented programs to test for such substances. The IOC was one of the first organizations to do so. After cyclists believed to be taking amphetamines collapsed and died at the 1960 Olympics and the 1967 Tour de France (not an Olympic event), the IOC established a medical commission and developed a list of banned substances. It began drug testing of contestants at the 1968 Olympic Games. Since then the IOC has continually expanded the list of forbidden substances, which include stimulants, narcotics, steroids, and masking agents (substances meant to hide banned drug use from urine drug tests).
Perhaps the most famous Olympic drug test came after the 100-meter dash at the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul. Canadian/Jamaican sprinter Ben Johnson set a world record of 9.79 seconds, but had his gold medal stripped from him when he tested positive for anabolic steroids. Johnson eventually was banned for life from track and field competition. But many believe that Johnson was not the only athlete to abuse drugs. Robert Voy, chief medical officer of the United States Olympic Committee from 1985 to 1989, concluded that “the only thing that separated Johnson from a great number of others who competed in Seoul in a vast variety of sports is simple: He got caught.”

In recent random tests of almost 1,200 Major League Baseball players, between 5 and 7 percent of them tested positive for the use of steroids and other performance-enhancing drugs. Jeffrey Brown gets perspective from Sports Illustrated senior baseball writer Tom Verducci.
JEFFREY BROWN: By any measure, it was a great post-season for baseball but now the action has moved from the ballpark to the lab. Yesterday, Major League Baseball released the results of its first year of testing for steroids, illegal drugs used to enhance a player's performance. In random tests of nearly 1,200 players, between 5 and 7 percent were positive. The results were anonymous and some players were tested more than once, so the exact number of players who used steroids is not known. But the results will trigger stricter new testing and penalties beginning next season. A cover story in Sports Illustrated helped bring this issue to public attention last year. Its author is Tom Verducci, senior baseball writer at the magazine. He joins us now. For the record, we invited representatives from Major League Baseball and the Players Association, but they declined to join us.

The trainer for the San Francisco Giants slugger Barry Bonds was among the people indicted earlier this week in a federal steroid sting. Spencer Michels looks at the challenges new sophisticated performance-enhancing drugs are presenting in policing the Olympics and professional sports leagues.
SPENCER MICHELS: Four men accused of distributing anabolic steroids to top athletes pleaded not guilty in federal court in San Francisco today. After parading a series of athletes before a grand jury in San Francisco last fall, the federal government announced the indictments yesterday on charges the men conspired to distribute the steroids. The defendants were allegedly tied to Balco, the bay area laboratory cooperative, which federal agents searched in September. The firm makes and supplies nutritional supplements and was suspected of developing a new hard-to-detect steroid called THG. Among those indicted were Balco's founder and the trainer for San Francisco Giants home run hitter Barry Bonds. In the U.S. synthetic steroids are illegal unless prescribed by a doctor for medical reasons. Mostly available via the Internet or on the black market, anabolic steroids are chemicals related to the male hormone testosterone. When injected or ingested, they build muscle and increase strength.

    Abstract
This paper discusses that drug use by athletes has been a problem from the Olympic Games of 668 BC to present time. The author reviews problems of alcohol use by professional golfers. The paper concludes that not all athletes may take drugs but the author assures that the majority has considered it in order to get an edge.
    From The Paper
"Not surprisingly, many common medicines contain banned drugs or substances so an athlete would have to be responsible for checking with a doctor or coach prior to taking anything. But many athletes know they are taking enhancers. They take the substances because they feel they need a boost to enhance their athletic prowess. But, unlike dried figs, the performance enhancing substances can lead to many severe side effects and even death."
