PASSING OF A PRESIDENT 40th president rode boundless optimism Ronald Reagan rose from Depression-era poverty to Hollywood fame. He governed California during its most tumultuous era since World War II. He transformed modern politics and hastened the fall of communism. Augustana Women's Tennis Brad Dietzel was selected as the new head coach this year, the 10th in school history, and his first season was certainly a success. The Vikings opened the season with dual meet victories over Coe and St. Ambrose before classes had even started on the Augustana campus.
Down through the years this program has been a constant success, beginning in the late 1970's when the All-American tandem of Beth McLaughlin and Ann Radloff led Augustana to a third place finish in the Association of Intercollegiate Athletics for Women (AIAW) national tournament in 1979. Since that time the Vikings have continued to pile up the victories and in 28 seasons they have compiled a record of 289-182 (.612).
In those 28 years, Augustana has been over the 10 victory mark 17 times, including 15 times in the last 16 seasons. There have been 21 winning seasons and twice (12-0 in 1979-80 and 18-0 in 1997-98) the Vikings have finished the year undefeated. In 1993-94 they put up a school record 19 victories in a 19-3 campaign.
A year ago the Vikings went 9-5 overall and 3-3 in the CCIW, placing fourth in the league championship.
