Sports Lift Esteem in Young Athletes
The payoff of playing Little League baseball doesn't only come in the form of stronger biceps and better hand-eye coordination. Participation in organized sports also boosts self-esteem and motivation among child athletes, psychologists' research has found.
Maureen Weiss, PhD, and her colleagues at the University of Oregon have conducted more than 60 studies on how participation in physical activity and sports affect youths' social and psychological development. Her work in the early 1990s reveals an association between motivation, high self-esteem and sport participation.
"Physical activity and sports have tremendous potential to enhance children's self-esteem and motivation," said Weiss, a professor of sport and exercise psychology.
Her research has consistently demonstrated that self-esteem and perceptions of physical ability can predict achievement behavior, motivation and positive affect. For example, the research found that children who under-estimated their abilities were less motivated and experienced more anxiety than those who estimated their capabilities accurately; that activity-specific self-perceptions predict achievement in that sport but not others; and that the positive and negative experiences in sports are directly related to self-esteem and motivation for future involvement.
Impact on schooling
Work by Ronald M. Jeziorski, EdD, an educational psychologist who consults for co-curricular programs in Santa Clara, Calif., supports the notion that youth who participate in sports earn higher grades and behave better in school and out. He is author of the book "The Importance of School Sports in American Education and Socialization," (University Press of America, 1994).

A Psychoanalytic Perspective on Anxiety in Athletes Tom Ferraro, Ph.D. ABSTRACT Introduction Winning and the Anxiety of Separation: Object Relations The Dread of Success ... References ABSTRACT A great deal of the literature on the relationship between anxiety and performance has come from a cognitive-behavioral perspective. This paper examines the relationship between the two constructs from a psychodynamic perspective. Included is a discussion of winning and the anxiety of separation from an object relations perspective, the dread of success, self psychology, Freudian instinct theory, and the secondary gain that is found in defeat. Suggestions for future directions in treatment of anxiety within the athletic context are offered as well as a postscript. Introduction From a review of the literature it is clear that the most popular conceptual paradigm in sport psychology is a cognitive-behavioral one. Texts used in undergraduate and graduate courses on sport psychology are slanted heavily toward a behavioral/ experimental model of intervention (Murphy, 1995; Horn, 1992). The standard sport psychology interventions include relaxation training, deep breathing, visualization, imagery, mental practice, self-talk and goal-setting. Sport psychology has its roots in academic settings which have traditionally been behavioral in orientation. However, if one works full-time in the field of sport psychology, it becomes clear that cognitive- behavioral techniques will only take you so far. These methods have a hard time with issues such as resistance in the athlete and more subtle effects such as shame, embarrassment and guilt when winning.

The American Academy of Pediatrics and the American Academy of Ophthalmology recommend mandatory protective eyewear for all functionally one-eyed individuals; and for athletes who have had eye surgery or trauma and whose ophthalmologists recommend eye protection. Protective eyewear is also strongly recommended for all other athletes.
Background
Over 41,000 sports-related and recreational eye injuries were treated in hospital emergency departments in 1993.(reference 1) Seventy-one percent of the injuries occurred in individuals under 25 years of age, 41% occurred in individuals under 15 years of age, and 6% occurred in children under 5 years of age. Children and adolescents are particularly susceptible to injuries because of their fearless manner of play and their athletic immaturity. (references 2-4) Ten sports or sports groupings are highlighted in this statement based on their popularity and the high incidence of eye injuries (see Table 1).(reference 1) Baseball and basketball are associated with the most eye injuries in athletes 5 to 24 years old.(reference 5) Participation rates and information on the severity of the injuries are unavailable, however, and so the relative risk of significant injuries cannot be determined for various sports.

Allen R. Sanderson writes,
no one complains when Ray Romano ("Raymond") gets $50 million a year—$1.8 million per episode—which takes about the same time to film as a baseball game...But let Alex Rodriguez sign for $25 million a year or let the mean baseball salary hit $2.5 million and commentators and the sports-talk-radio crowd get in a dither
My favorite example of a highly-paid entertainer whose salary I do not understand is Regis Philbin, who someone once described as "famous for being famous." At least with athletes, there seems to be a higher correlation between pay and performance. For Discussion . Do you suppose people do not complain about overpaid entertainers because it is so much harder to measure the quality of their performances objectively?

When ARod gets his salary, that must somehow add $1 to my ticket price and $.25 to the cost of a hot dog. Regis' salary is based on ad revenue which is not directly paid for by the consumer.
