143. PCRM--Health--Food Power For Athletes
Food Power for athletes Both competitive and recreational athletes areoften in search of a nutrition program to provide that winning edge.
http://www.pcrm.org/health/Info_on_Veg_Diets/vegetarian_athletes.html
Food Power for Athletes The Nutrition Game Plan In particular, a balanced diet that is high in carbohydrate, low in fat, and adequate in protein, is the recommended diet for athletes. Due to its high carbohydrate and low fat content, a vegetarian diet is an optimal sports diet. Fueling Your Body: Carbohydrate Gets the Gold Your body is always burning a mixture of carbohydrate, fat, and protein. The duration of exercise, intensity of exercise, level of physical conditioning, and initial muscle glycogen levels will determine which primary fuel your body will use. In general, carbohydrate is the primary fuel utilized during high intensity exercise. In fact, about 55 to 75 percent of calories in the diet should come from carbohydrate, and even more in individuals who compete in endurance or ultra-endurance events. Whole grains, fruits, and vegetables are excellent sources of carbohydrate. With prolonged exercise, at lower intensities, fat (in the form of fatty acids) becomes the primary fuel source. The shift to fatty acids during exercise helps spare the carbohydrate (glycogen) stores in your body and allows for prolonged exercise. However, while high carbohydrate intake is recommended for performance, there is no need to increase fat in the diet beyond the commonly recommended 10 to 30 percent of calories, as it is taken from storage sites in the muscles when needed. Increasing fat in the diet is not recommended for improving performance.

College Athletes and Alcohol and Other Drug Use Alcohol Spit Tobacco Male Athletes and Sexual Assault Diet Pills, Laxatives, and Diuretics ... Other Organizations Few would argue that athletic success depends on both physical and mental health. Given that, it would be reasonable to expect that college athletes avoid using alcohol and other drugs to preserve their overall health and enhance their athletic performance. In fact, college athletes use alcohol, spit tobacco, and steroids at higher rates than their non-athlete peers. Cocaine attracted publicity for its role in the deaths of star athletes in the 1980s and has since waned as a prevalent drug among college athletes. Even so, cocaine still poses risks for college athletes, as do other drugs such as diet aids, ephedrine, marijuana, and psychedelics. Alcohol
A national study of varsity athletes found that almost 81 percent of athletes had used alcohol in the previous 12 months, a decrease from 89 percent in 1989. This document is also available in Acrobat format.

    • Kathy our best Seasonally Adjusted Athlete:
The ABS Fun Run for the Castles Shield was held at lunchtime on Thursday 27 May. In a field of 638 runners SCT's Kathy Southgate was the overall best 'seasonally adjusted' athlete with a result of 1247 adjusted seconds. Kathy was also the third female to finish in the open category running 28:14 for the 7.3km course around Lake Ginninderra.
Anne Southgate placed second junior female in 29:53 just ahead of training partner Tanja Gautschi in 30:30. Here are all the 'SCT' results: 19th James Southgate 27:56, 21st Kathy Southgate 28:14, 33rd Anne Southgate 29:53, 36th Heath Pearce 30:15, 38th Charlie Modrak 30:23, 41st Tanja Gautschi 30:30. The winners of the fun run were Corey Tucker in 24:16 and Sarah Fien in 26:45.
    • Winsbury and Hosking reach summit in mountainous cross country runs:
The CCC Winter Season continued on Saturday 29 May with the Bindubi St dirt-road runs. This was the first time this 'high altitude' course had been used and surprised some competitors with the inclusion of a 'bloody big hill' which had to be negotiated twice for the 6.5k course. It came as no surprise that World Mountain Running rep John Winsbury easily won the 3.5k race and then 'warmed down' with a third place in the 6.5k race. Jessamy Hosking scored her first win for the season in the 3.5k race, well ahead of training partner Emily Glover.

and Speed of Performance in Baseball and Softball Players. Abstract : The relationship of caffeine consumption to sports performance among athletes was investigated. Baseball and softball players were withdrawn from caffeinated substances and asked to perform sports specific motor tasks. Results, controlling for effects of mood, suggest a statistical link between caffeine withdrawal and poor motor control, reaction time and speed of performance. Skin Cancer Updates
Athlete's Foot Athlete’s foot is a very common skin condition — many people will develop it at least once in their lives. It is more frequent among teenage and adult males, but may occur in women and in children under the age of 12. Athlete’s foot can be easily treated, but may recur in susceptible individuals. Athlete’s foot, or tinea pedis, is a fungal infection, tiny plant-like “germs," that can grow and multiply on human skin, especially the feet. It grows best in a dark, moist, and warm environment. A foot inside a shoe is the perfect place for the fungus. The same fungus may also cause “jock itch” in the groin. Why does athlete’s foot develop? Athlete’s foot is contagious and may be caught by walking barefoot in the locker room. However, it is not known exactly who is at risk for getting athlete’s foot. Sweaty feet, tight shoes/socks, not drying one’s feet well after swimming, bathing, or exercising all contribute to the development of athlete’s foot. What does athlete’s foot look like?
