Introduction A letter from Cedric W. Dempsey,
NCAA President You're at an age when the last thing
you probably want is more advice. But there's only one thing to do with good advicepass it on. As president of the NCAA, the best advice I can pass along if you plan to compete athletically at the college level is to start asking questions. Find out if you're on track to meet academic eligibility and core-course requirements. See what the graduation rate of the athletics programs and the athletes in your sport are at the colleges in which you are interested. Ask what academic support services are available and how academic progress is tracked. You'll notice that not one of those questions deals with the athletics side of being a student-athlete. Instead of focusing on which college can lead to a career in the pros, consider that:
  • There are nearly 1 million high-school football players and about 550,000 basketball players. Of that number, about 250 make it to the NFL and about 50 make an NBA team.

Welcome... to my unofficial site. I received a liver transplant in March 1994 at the University of Minnesota Hospital and Clinic. I invite you to read my story at Dick A. Hawkins Liver Transplant which also features my wife's story as my best friend and frequent care-giver. Since the surgery, I've been involved in the transplant community, trying to give back to those with whom I share this experience. For 2-1/2 years I was the editor/writer of "TROM Topics," the quarterly newsletter for Transplant Recipients Organization of Minnesota . Just 4-1/2 months after transplant, I participated in the 1994 U.S. Transplant Games and was hooked! As of 1995, more than 450,000 people in the world had received organ transplants. Yet less than 2,000 attend the U.S. and World Transplant Games. These are Olympic-style games for recipients of solid organ or bone marrow transplants. They are an expression of athletic ability and, more important, an effort to improve organ donation throughout the world. With more than 67,000 Americans on the waiting list, we need to bring this to the attention of the public. The Games provide publicity to help encourage donation. In the USA, National Kidney Foundation sponsors the U.S. Transplant Games in even numbered years. The Games events are separated by gender and age groups. They feature opening ceremonies, athletic events, workshops, and closing ceremonies. We honor the donor families who make everything possible. We pack a lot into the four days. Most of us develop friendships that last a lifetime.

    By Simon Hart
    LONDON SUNDAY TELEGRAPH
The spectacle of victorious athletes grabbing a national flag and parading it around the stadium is a familiar part of international sporting competition, but U.S. Olympic officials have ordered their 550-strong team to exercise restraint and avoid any jingoistic behavior.
The plan is part of a charm offensive aimed at repairing the country's international reputation after the deepening crisis in Iraq and damaging revelations of the mistreatment of Iraqi prisoners by U.S. forces at the Abu Ghraib prison.
"American athletes find themselves in extraordinary circumstances in Athens in relation to the world as we know it right now," said Mike Moran, a veteran former spokesman for the United States Olympic Committee who has been retained as a consultant to advise athletes how to behave.
"Regardless of whether there is anti-American sentiment in Athens or not, the world watches Americans a lot now in terms of how they behave and our culture. What I am trying to do with the athletes and coaches is to suggest to them that they consider how the normal things they do at an event, including the Olympics, might be viewed as confrontational or insulting or cause embarrassment."
Four years ago at the Sydney Olympics, members of the victorious American 400-meter relay team were widely condemned for strutting with the U.S. flag after their gold medal presentation. American officials, mindful of the country's precarious standing in world opinion, are desperate to avoid any repeat.

Welcome to this site about gay and lesbian participation in sport.
The opinions expressed in these pages are those of the author. Feel free to disagree with me. Gay invisibility in sport There are a lot of cultural myths and prejudices about sport and sexuality. Sports are often promoted as if they were the exclusive province of heterosexual men while women are frequently considered to have value in sport only as sex appeal. And gay men and lesbians don't exist in sport. At least, that's the impression we get from much of the media. To quote from " When it is possible to keep Gay and Lesbian out of the history books, it is done. When their accomplishments cannot be overlooked, their sexual orientation is edited out." So there are lots of examples of gay and lesbian people involved in sport at this site, to remind you that the TV and papers don't tell us the whole story. Many young gay men choose to avoid sports because much of men's sport has an aggressively heterosexual culture that is at worst threatening and at best unwelcoming. Some have argued that gay men tend more towards the solitary sports (eg diving, track) rather than team sports like football, because they feel estranged from the heterosexualised rituals and presumptions of many team sports. An alternative view suggests that gay men in team sports are simply much more closeted - that is, they tend to "pass" as straight. Whatever the truth, gay men and lesbians are, and always have been, actively involved in sport. Mostly we have not been gay-identified, but even in the elite sports ranks there are "out" gay men and women, though still far too few of them. As with any minority group, we need role models and heroes to remind us of what is possible, and to combat the destructive anti-gay propaganda being fed to our young people by hate-mongerers.

Questions Most Frequently Asked About Sports Nutrition

    Winning Nutrition for Athletes
Whether it's playing football, swimming or jogging, athletes need to eat a nutritious, balanced diet to fuel their body. Good nutrition, like any sporting event, has basic ground rules. Following these rules and getting plenty of practice will help athletes feel great and score those winning points! What diet is best for athletes? Are Carbohydrates important for athletes? Do Athletes need extra protein or protein supplements to build muscles? What should an athlete eat before, during and after exercise?
What diet is best for athletes? All athletes need a diet that provides enough energy in the form of carbohydrates and fats as well as essential protein, vitamins and minerals. This means a diet containing 55-60 percent of calories from carbohydrates (10 to 15 percent from sugars and the rest from starches), no more than 30 percent of calories from fat and the remaining (about 10-15 percent) from protein. That translates into eating a variety of foods every day - grains, vegetables, fruits, beans, lean meats, and low fat dairy products. The base of the diet should come from carbohydrates in the form of starches and sugars. Fluids, especially water, are also important to the winning combination. Dehydration can stop even the finest athlete from playing his or her best game.
