The foul was on Baylor's Jessika Stratton. The score was tied at 71. Stratton stood in disbelief as the Lady Vols sunk two free throws and advanced in the NCAA tournament while the greatest season in Lady Bear history came to a stunning halt. Although dejected for a time, Stratton didn't complain or allow this situation to steal her joy. "You're going to be upset," Jessika explains. "(But) I received so many e-mails reminding me of how much I was loved. That helped put things in perspective. It's basketball. It's not life."

Gay athletes and events in the 20th century are few: Bill Tilden , who does not hide his homosexuality, wins the men's singles title at Wimbledon. He goes on to win two more Wimbledon titles, seven U.S. championships, and leads U.S. teams to seven Davis Cup victories. In 1950, a survey of sportswriters names Tilden the greatest tennis player of the half-century. He dies in 1953. Tom Waddell , a 30-year-old Army physician, places sixth in the Olympic decathlon. Waddell, who is openly gay, becomes increasingly involved in gay politics. In 1976, Waddell and his partner Charles Deaton are the first gay men to be featured in the "Couples" section of People magazine. Five years later, Waddell forms San Francisco Arts and Athletics to plan the first "Gay Olympic Games." David Kopay , an NFL running back who played for five teams (San Francisco, Detroit, Washington, New Orleans, Green Bay) between 1964-72, becomes the first professional team-sport athlete to come out doing so three years after retiring. He admits his homosexuality during an interview with the now-defunct

As Jim MacLaren wrote, “When you see the images of the Challenged Athletes Foundation, now ten years young and all that it holds, you will see as I do, that the image is deep. It is an event, yes. Coaching and Staff Opportunities Sport Descriptions Vision Descriptions Contact ... Results/Records Events Calendar Athletics Cycling Goalball Judo ... USABA Fact Sheet USABA Mission The mission of the United States Association of Blind Athletes is to increase the number and quality of grassroots-through-competitive, world-class athletic opportunities for Americans who are blind or visually impaired. We do this by providing athlete and coach identification and support, program and event management, and national and international representation. We value the life-enhancing aspects of sports and the opportunity to demonstrate the abilities of people who are blind and visually impaired. USABA Vision We envision a world in which all individuals who are blind or visually impaired have the same opportunities to discover their athletic potential and pursue their athletic dreams as all other people. Since its founding in 1976, the USABA has reached over 100,000 blind individuals. During that time, the organization has emerged as more than just a world-class trainer of blind athletes, it has become a vocal champion of the abilities of America's legally blind residents. Although an athlete may be blind, they are in no way inferior to other elite, sighted athletes. Many USABA athletes have served as U.S. Olympic Team alternate and won medals against sighted competitors. As more blind athletes receive the same opportunities as their sighted peers, the day has come when a blind athelete has competed in a sighted competition - Marla Runyan qualifiied for the 2000 Sydney Olympic team in the 1,500 meters and made the finals. She has also competed in the Boston and New York Marathons.

Directory of Sports Organizations for Athletes with Disabilities
Steven E. Mayer, MD Forward Sports competitions for athletes with disabilities have blossomed over the past 35 years. These athletes have special requirements that only physiatrists can address. Unfortunately, most of these athletes are not being followed by physiatrists, and no system exists for engaging qualified physiatrists for this purpose. This directory takes the first step by providing a nationwide listing of organizations to help local physiatrists become involved with sporting events for athletes with disabilities. The organizations listed herein will provide information about classification systems and local participation guidelines. This directory contains information on the following topics: (a) (b) (c-d) (e-h) ... To next page of directory Submissions lsands@aapmr.org
