Three high school boys volleyball players from Hawaii were named Thursday to the training team for USA Volleyball's National Youth Team. They are: Spencer McLachlin , 6-foot-6 Punahou freshman, a right-side hitter. Kawika Shoji , 6-3 Iolani sophomore, a setter. Adam Tuifagu , 6-3 Kamehameha Schools senior, an outside hitter. A fourth Hawaii player, Punahou eighth grader Erik Shoji , was named to the 25-player roster for the National High Performance Boys Training Camp. Kawika and Erik Shoji are sons of University of Hawaii Wahine coach Dave Shoji. McLachlin is the son of former Punahou coach and current KFVE television analyst Chris McLachlin. McLachlin, Kawika Shoji and Tuifagu comprise one-sixth of the 18-member National Youth Team training pool. During a training camp July 10-16 at Lake Placid, N.Y., 12 players from the pool will be chosen to play in a tournament of teams from North America, Central America and the Caribbean July 26-31 in the Dominican Republic. Top teams there will win bids to the 2005 World Championships in their age group.

How Safe Is Your Child's High School Athletic Program:
Ten Things Parents Should Look For By Lindsay Barton The National Association of Athletic Trainers recommends that parents look for the following ten things in evaluating the safety aspects of a high school athletic program:
  • A comprehensive emergency plan A full time, on site, qualified athletic health care provider (i.e. trainer) available to student athletes at the school on a daily basis who has received training in the prevention, immediate care, treatment and rehabilitation of athletic injuries.

Letting It Go To Their Heads Increasingly, High School Athletes Are Turning To Sports Psychologists By Patricia Wen At first, the Salem teenager balked when his parents asked him to see a shrink. "Do you think I have emotional problems?" asked Shelley Peirce, 15. But he gave it a try. Things weren't getting better on their own, so he thought he might as well get his head examined. Every week or so, he entered a therapist's office, plopped his 6-foot 2-inch frame into a sofa chair, and divulged his feelings. To his surprise, he's hooked. He and his therapist saw the results they wanted. He's swimming faster. The lanky redhead has shaved two seconds off his 200-yard freestyle time, giving him confidence he may break away from his lackluster past.

Youth movement flourishes for the Green Wave
    By RAY COX
    THE ROANOKE TIMES
Fluttery nerves and delicate constitutions had no place in Narrows High School's girls basketball kingdom this year. At times, the Narrows faithful felt like cutting down the nets. At others they felt like cutting open a pack of sedatives. "It's been that kind of year," Green Wave coach Todd Lusk said. Lusk saw it coming, which may have given him time to prepare emotionally. Evidently, he was up to that stressful task, seeing as how he's spending more time hopping up and down off the bench than he has fainting on a psychiatrist's soft sofa. Lusk is a bright guy, but any coach might have figured on never being bored following a decision to celebrate youth by starting a freshman and two sophomores. Right from the beginning, the Green Wave constituency has put its faith in sophomores Britta Stables and Nikki Johnston and freshman Erica Lindsey along with steady seniors Jessica Green and Lisa Bowers. Narrows was playing for its basketball life Thursday night against Galax in the semifinals of the Mountain Empire District tournament and there promised to be more of the same Saturday if somehow the Wave prevailed to make it to the title tilt. Only winning the tournament was going to earn the team a trip to the Region C tournament next week.

Wixon: Hard to explain winless season
By MATT WIXON / The Dallas Morning News Billy Ray Smith knew that his Plano team was going to be a powerhouse before the 1977 season started. In fact, he knew it long before the Wildcats started that state-championship season. Smith knew it a decade earlier, when he was 100 pounds lighter, Lyndon B. Johnson was president and the music world was evolving from the British Invasion to the disco sensation. Smith knew it from the time his Pop Warner teams from the east side of Plano played teams from the city's west side. "We knew when we combined both halves of this city into one force, something spectacular was going to happen," Smith said. "That was the coolest thing about growing up at that time in Plano. The fact that there was one school, and we knew we had a lot of players that were going to make a difference."

"You always hear those things, and proof is in the performance," Ireland said. "Rickie performed well right off the bat. You could tell that this young man had the physical talents to be a good golfer, but he had the mental game, too." Fowler played most of the season as the Nighthawks' No. 1 golfer and helped them win the Southern Section Desert Divisional last week. CheckWidthImage(1,850,216); "He was always stuck in there, always tried his hardest and always came through when we needed it, too ... just a real clutch player," said Murrieta Valley senior Jon Crane. "He is the one we can rely on every single match. "That is a lot of pressure as a freshman, and I think he is taking it real well."

by default . In my area, soccer starts at age 7; football, at age 8. Some of the best athletes do well in soccer as seven-year olds, then are reluctant to switch sports when they turn eight. They are not sure they would be good at football, but they know they are good at soccer. High-school coaches should try to make sure their community has a youth-football program equal to the youth soccer program in Another problem for high-school coaches is youth football coaches who drive away good athletes. If you want to know what high school football was like 30 years ago, go to a youth football practice. There you will often see middle-aged men putting nine- and ten-year old boys through a grueling regimen of calisthenics, grass drills, full-speed hitting drills.
Many such youth football coaches convince parents and players that football is a sadistic, Bataan Death March sort of experience. These kids choose soccer or water polo as their fall sport. High-school coaches should try to bring their local youth coaches up to date: Use stretching, not calisthenics and grass drills. Use half-speed drills and walk-throughs; not so much full-speed hitting.
do have a need to put down youth coaches in order to feel better about themselves.

Problem/Condition: Alternative high schools serve approximately 280,000 students nationwide who are at high risk for failing or dropping out of regular high school or who have been expelled from regular high school because of illegal activity or behavioral problems. Such settings provide important opportunities for delivering health promotion education and services to these youth and young adults. However, before this survey, the prevalence of health-risk behaviors among students attending alternative high schools nationwide was unknown. Reporting Period: February-May 1998.

Last Updated: April 06, 2004 ANNOUNCEMENT! All,
In 2003 I will gradually phase out all the league portions of the http://www.decatursports.com website. It has been a great six years but the amount of time required is too much for me. My children have graduated from most of the leagues and I find myself less involved day to day with any of the leagues and I have some different goals. I am going to keep DecaturSports.com up but will only keep the coaching content while providing links on the front page to each of the local leagues' websites.
The website gets an average of about 12,000 hits per day which ranks it as one of the busiest youth sports websites on the web. It has long been recognized as a leader by many national youth sports organizations in the area of coaching youth sports. Many peoples' first impression of Decatur, Alabama comes from their contact with the website. I feel proud to have been part of that.
