Winter Recreation in Washington State
Opportunities Abound! Winter sport enthusiasts and families can spice up the cold months with a variety of snow activities sponsored by Washington State Parks' winter recreation program. The evergreen state is "ever green" only in parts. The Olympic, Cascade, Blue and Selkirk Mountains provide great opportunities for all types of outdoor winter fun. Cross-country and downhill skiing, ski-jouring, snowmobiling, dog sledding, snowshoeing and tubing are available at a variety of locations across the state. In concert with federal agencies, private landowners and other state agencies, Washington State Parks administers this program in three national parks, seven national forests, and blocks of state and private forest land. Five major highway passes, kept open to normal traffic in winter, provide easy access to play sites and trailheads.
Winter Recreation Program This program was created to open winter recreation opportunities across the state to everyone. Program priorities include safety, wildlife awareness and protection, and cooperation in accord with the Winter Recreation Code of Ethics (scroll down this page to access links with important information on program priorities mentioned, as well as permits, publications, and trail signs). Two citizen advisory committees advise State Parks in the administration of the winter recreation program, development of facilities and winter sport opportunities. If you would like to know more about the work of these groups or are interested in a future appointment as a committee member, call the winter recreation program at (360) 586-6645. The

When the International Olympic Committee (IOC) was established in 1894, one of the sports proposed for the programme was ice skating . However, no skating was conducted at the Olympics until the 1908 Summer Olympics in London , which featured four figure skating events. Ulrich Salchow (10-fold World champion) and Madge Syers (the first competitive woman figure skater) won the individual titles with ease.

    HISTORY
In 1937 Ventura County vision aries formed a club dedicated to the budding sport of downhill skiing. They secured a 99-year land lease in the Los Padres National Forest, located west of Frasier Park, and called themselves the Los Padres Ski Club. On that site the Club built a rope tow, powered by a gasoline engine, and a small warming hut. Over the ensuing years, the rope tow gradually fell into disuse as ski areas were developed throughout the state. All that remains now is the hut's slab and the "bull wheel" and its supporting structure. But the spirit and dedication exhibited by our founders is just as evident today as it was then. Although now we ride to Mammoth in video buses, stay in condos with microwave ovens and VCR's, and ride up the mountain in high-speed quad chairs, we still share the same dream...the exhilaration of the perfect ski run.
    WHAT WE DO
Los Padres Ski Club is committed to its membership to provide affordable recreation and trips. While affordable, our trips are still very accommodating for all. In the winter we usually plan at least five trips to Mammoth Mountain, approximately once each month November through April. We usually rent several units in a condominium complex in the town of Mammoth Lakes. The transportation is either by chartered bus or carpools depending on the number of attendees. The "bus trips" include transportation, lodging, and Saturday night's meal and as members the cost is about $145-$165 for the weekend. The "carpool trips" do not include transportation and cost $75-$90.
