Elizabeth Williams returns a shot during a wheelchair tennis match Thursday at Irvine Valley College. Irvine Valley College hosted the Western Regional Wheelchair Tennis Tournament last week. It was the fourth year the tournament had been held in Irvine. The event was sanctioned by the United States Tennis Association and the International Tennis Federation. More than a hundred players from around the United States and Mexico, Australia, Japan and other countries, vied for titles in men's and women's singles and doubles divisions that include open, B's, C's, quadriplegic and juniors. The open divisions divided prize money of $4,000 among the top three places. Winners from all divisions also gained points to help them qualify for the U.S. Open held in San Diego in October. "These players played their hearts out in the sun and heat in Irvine," said tournament director Mikel Bistany. "The weekend was filled with good play."

BRITISH WHEELCHAIR TABLE TENNIS ASSOCIATION
(BWTTA)
Table Tennis has been a Paralympic Games sport since 1960 but was one of the earliest sports introduced in the rehabilitation of spinal cord injury patients.
Table Tennis is a popular indoor activity because it is a keenly competitive game, requires little space and is inexpensive. It is also easy to learn and beginners can have great fun playing at a recreational level. Table Tennis improves the concentration, reaction speed and coordination of those who play and has long since been used in the rehabilitation of people with a disability.
Table Tennis is one of the sports that wheelchair players can competitively play against an able-bodied opponent and many wheelchair players are members of table tennis clubs in their communities.
Competitions are grouped into male and female, singles and doubles with players playing in categories based on their level of disability. There is also an 'Open' competition were all classes compete to become the overall Champion.
To compensate for being seated when playing, some wheelchair players use a higher than normal chair to play. Those with limited grip use an elastic bandage or strapping to increase grip of the bat.
