Biola's wheelchair tennis program is truly unique. The program provides instruction for recreational players as well as highly competitive athletes. Recent years have been outstanding for our wheelchair tennis program. We've introduced many new players to the game and have seen huge development in others. We are grateful to the Greater Whittier Tennis Association and La Mirada Tennis Club for their financial commitment. It was funding from the clubs and other special gifts that allowed two local students to travel to the Regional Intercollegiate Championship at Tucson Arizona. Both Eddie Medel and Vicki Sarantakos earned their right to attend the 2001 National Collegiate Championship at Alton Illinois, where Eddie won his flight and Vicki gave him his toughest match. Although Vicki just began playing tennis in September of 2000, she gained international experience at the Indoor National Championship and the U. S. Open Wheelchair Championships and finished her first year ranked #10 in USTA Women's A division. Eddie Medel teamed with Gary Young in doubles and did very well at the National Level. They won the B doubles at the Southern California regional championships earning the USTA ranking of #6 in Men's B Doubles. Gary was ranked

When approached two summers ago, Jim Hayes made a commitment to build a wheelchair tennis program on campus. Two years and two national titles later, UTA is catching the attention of other universities interested in creating opportunities for disabled students.
Snow and Marcia Rodriguez, former president of the Texas Section of the United States Tennis Association, pushed for UTA to start giving scholarships to its wheelchair tennis players.
The association agreed with a three-year seed grant to get the program started. With the grant, the university received $20,000 the first year, then as the university began to add financial support, the funding dropped to $10,000 the second year and $5,000 this year. Hayes said as the grant funding dropped, the Student Service Fee Advisory Committee helped balance the expenses.

Adaptive and Wheelchair Tennis
Few rule modifications exist in wheelchair tennis. The most significant rule change is the "two bounce rule." This means that the wheelchair tennis player is allowed two bounces before the ball needs to be returned across the court. The first bounce must be in bounds and the second bounce may be out of bounds. Tennis is appropriate for ages 8 and up. We will focus on tennis skills and drills in a fun and encouraging atmosphere. Special to The Clarion-Ledger After spending years traveling the country to compete in tennis tournaments, Johnnie McGinn and Mike Blackburn won't have to go far to compete this weekend. The state's only tennis tournament for the disabled kicks off at 8 a.m. today at the Courthouse Racquet and Fitness Club off Lakeland Drive. McGinn, 31, injured his spinal cord in a 1994 car accident and was paralyzed from the waist down. Two years after he left Methodist Rehabilitation Center the former Belhaven soccer player was mentally and physically prepared to tackle sports again. "I had always been competitive, but you can't play soccer in a wheelchair and I was looking for another way to work out," he said. That's when fellow Methodist Rehab patient and big-time tennis enthusiast Michael Cottingham came in. "Mike's a great motivator.  I started going to practices and reading about wheelchair tennis and asking lots of questions," McGinn said. "That's the first thing you realize about sports for the disabled. It's not just competitive, but the social part is how you learn so much. It's more like a support group where you can ask any question that someone who's not in a wheelchair just wouldn't understand."
