Wheelchair tennis!?! How do you play tennis in a wheelchair?
This is a question that every wheelchair tennis player has heard at one time or another. The only difference in the rules between wheelchair tennis and regular tennis is that wheelchair players can let the ball bounce twice if they need to (only the first bounce needs to be in). But any wheelchair player will tell you that it goes way beyond that. The added complexities that come with having to do everything with their hands and arms makes this game a whole new sport. One of the fastest growing wheelchair sports in the world with over 3000 players worldwide, wheelchair tennis stands out among wheelchair sports in that it lets able-bodied and disabled players play against each other on the same court. No longer do all of the participants need to be in a wheelchair like most other wheelchair sports. A disabled player can play against an able-bodied player, or even with an able-bodied player in a format called up/down doubles. This format lets families and friends play tennis together and helps break down some of the stereotypes and barriers that often limit interaction between the wheelchair bound and the upright world.
Wheelchair Tennis - Rules of Play
The game of wheelchair tennis follows the same rules as able-bodied tennis as endorsed by the International Tennis Federation except the wheelchair tennis player is allowed two bounces of the ball.

The Hampshire player beat world number two David Wagner in the final of the competition at Izuka by 6-3, 6-1 to add the Japan title to the British, US and Australian titles he already holds.
"I am very happy to have won the first Japan Open to have Super Series status and I'm delighted to have won all four Super Series titles," said Norfolk afterwards. "I thought I played a very solid match."
The Briton won the British and US Opens, the last two Super Series events of 2003, in a fine run of form that saw him end the year having collected five NEC Tour singles titles in six tournaments.
Norfolk's second title of a so far unbeaten 2004 was the Australian Open crown in February and the Japan Open not only completes the full set of all four Super Series titles, but also gives the Briton his eighth consecutive NEC Tour triumph.

NATIONAL WHEELCHAIR TENNIS ASSOCIATION
(NWTA)
The National Wheelchair Tennis Association of Great Britain aims to promote and develop Wheelchair Tennis and is affiliated to the British Wheelchair Sports Foundation and the Lawn Tennis Association at National level and the International Wheelchair Tennis Federation at International level.
Over recent years Wheelchair Tennis has been one of the fastest growing sports with over 6,000 players participating from 50 countries around the world. Wheelchair tennis started in Britain in 1983 and is one of the most challenging and exciting wheelchair sports to play. The 'two bounce rule', which allows the wheelchair player to let the ball bounce twice if required, enables the sport to be played either in wheelchair tournaments or together with able bodied players.
The Association works in partnership with the British Tennis Foundation (formerly the LTA Trust) to co-ordinate a full programme of activities including Introductory Camps for beginners, quads and juniors; Intermediate Camps for developing players and national training for our elite players. In addition, a full range of tournaments provides competitive playing opportunities at local, national and international level.
Membership of the NWTA has grown to over 200, all of whom receive a regular newsletter containing information on national and international tournaments, coaching tips and many other interesting articles.

Volunteer Experiences Volunteer Work This Issue Home Page International Wheelchair Tennis Championship Nariyuki Kanegae from Japan I went to the International Wheelchair Tennis Competition at the end of May, 1997. The competition was held in Iizuka City which is in Fukuoka prefecture, Japan. This year, about 50 foreign players and about 100 Japanese players joined the competition. This tennis competition is called JAPAN OPEN. This is one of the biggest tennis competitions in Japan. This year I assisted two New Zealand players. They had artificial legs, so they belonged to the "Standing Class" which is the class for the people who can't walk well. My hardest work was interpreting because they often asked me very difficult questions about Japanese culture and customs. Some of the questions were difficult to answer even in Japanese. So, I thought that I have to study more about Japan before I go abroad next year. By the way, I was really surprised by one of the New Zealand tennis players. I couldn't believe that he had an artificial leg. He made an effort which I couldn't imagine. I was really moved.

Collegiate Wheelchair Tennis Update
January, 2001
One year after the idea of a competitive collegiate wheelchair program was introduced to the USTA, it has become a reality. A working committee made up of Mike Cottingham, Jeanie Peabody, Bill Fairbanks and Lyn DeLaney, working on behalf of the USTA, was able to write rules and guidelines, format of play, establish a database of colleges and players and set the dates for the inaugural collegiate wheelchair tennis tournament. From contact with 36 colleges who had individual players or potential programs, eight players from six colleges embarked on this historic event. Out of eight players, seven were funded by their colleges and six were full time students. Colleges participating were: Georgia State, University of Wisconsin at Whitewater, University of Arizona, University of Southern Illinois, Bossier City College and Tufts University. The USTA committee was pleased to share this information at the ITA Coaches Convention this December at Saddlebrook Resort in Florida. In addition to the presentation at the general meeting, the USTA gave a clinic and demonstration called “Teaching Wheelchair Tennis at the College Level.” "
