The NEC Wheelchair Tennis Tour is sanctioned by the International Tennis Federation (ITF) and began with 21 events in 13 countries. By 2002, it had grown considerably to include more than 120 tournaments in 30 countries worldwide.

Wheelchair Tennis
Wheelchair tennis is a sport for handicapped people which is played on regular tennis courts. All "pedestrian" variations of tennis are being played, i.e. same-sex doubles, mixed etc. The only rule that differs from non-wheelchair tennis is the one that concerns the number of bounces a ball may take before it must be played. In wheelchair tennis the ball may bounce up to two times, the second bounce may also occur outside of the field. This also holds true for service. Wheelchair tennis got started in the mid-70s thanks to the efforts of Brad Parks who is effectively the creator of competitive wheelchair tennis. Email: info@kentuckytennis.com Wheelchair tennis is one of the fastest growing and most challenging of all wheelchair sports. To meet this demand, the USTA Kentucky offers programs geared towards the wheelchair player. USTA Kentucky will host the 5th Annual Bluegrass Wheelchair Tennis Tournament in Louisville August 20-22, 2003, starting off with a player reception and a UP/DOWN play on Friday night. Match play will begin on Saturday morning. Plans are now being made for a wheelchair tennis programs across the state. See the Schedule (link below) for program details. The rules for wheelchair tennis are the same with the exception of the wheelchair player is allowed two bounces (if needed) of the ball (the first being in play). Wheelchair tennis provides persons with disabilities the opportunity to share in activities with their peers and family, whether able-bodied or disabled. Playing wheelchair tennis adds to socialization and the normalization of life after sustaining a disabling injury. Proficient wheelchair users do play and compete against stand-up players and USA Tennis Leagues. A wheelchair tennis player must have a medically diagnosed, mobility-related disability, with a substantial or total loss of function in one or more extremities. In wheelchair tennis, the player must master the game of tennis and the supreme use of the wheelchair. Learning mobility on the court is exciting and challenging, and helps build strength and cardiovascular ability.
