Race Results
Course Map Race 2 An A to B course that can be described as Intermediate in difficulty with a steady, though not steep, uphill climb. A 666-meter altitude gain over 22 kilometers, which is, on average, a 30-meter altitude gain each kilometer. The race starts from the South gate of the Raniban Forest and follows the road to Kakani. From a starting altitude of approximatley 1400 meters, the road climbs steadily through one of the most picturesque routes in all of Kathmandu Valley. The route winds through Nepalese villages and a countless number of terrace fields and culminates at an altitude of 2066 meters with a stunning display of the Himalayas along the Valley's rim. The surface is mainly comprised of rough patches of broken road, minor water crossings and occasional muddy/sandy sections. "The winding switchbacks at Kaulethana, at nearly 2000 meters, saw a line of six riders all within striking distance of the lead..." The Race
It's a rare occasion to see a main road closed to all traffic for a sporting event, but the start of The Siemans Action Asia Himalayan Mountain Bike Race Series 2001 today unveiled a new standard in police-supervised road closures.

Methuen athlete refuses to be stopped
By Jeffrey Klineman
Eagle-Tribune Writer METHUEN Ready to feel like you don't have any excuse for not getting the most out of your life? Meet Erik D. Corbett, who 23 months ago was in a car accident that left him a paraplegic in a wheelchair. Erik Corbett, who lost the use of his legs after a devastating car accident almost two years ago, has not allowed his injuries to stop him from being an active athlete. Here he is shown getting into his three-wheeled bike. Here is a list of the sports he has participated in since then: mountain biking; water-skiing; snow skiing; lacrosse; basketball; road racing, including a marathon; scuba diving; lacrosse; hockey; rugby; racquetball; crew; golf. "I got bored," the 22-year-old Corbett said, sitting in the kitchen of his parents' house in Methuen. "Before last summer, I was pretty unhappy. But I got bored, called and got one of those mountain chairs. I went riding." The trip, with ski instructor, action junkie and fellow paraplegic Jeff Krill, energized Corbett. Since then, his injury has not prevented him from an active make that hyperactive lifestyle. On Sunday, Corbett will take part in his second marathon in five months, in Orlando, Fla.

Fall Activities Kick In At Copper Mountain Resort - Mountain biking now open to the public
September 9, 1998
With a hint of chill hanging in the early morning air and area aspens revealing hints of gold, fall is fast approaching Summit County. Copper Mountain Resort helps visitors make the most of these last weeks before winter with special activities centered around fall in the high country.
Long awaited locally, Copper has opened the first in a series of new mountain biking trails on the mountain. Construction on the 4.7-mile trail was recently completed, and public access to the trail began Labor Day Weekend. The trail - rated beginner/intermediate by the resort - is suitable for everyone except first time-mountain bikers and small children, officials say. Also, the trail is wide enough to accommodate wheelchair mountain bikes.
Copper will continue to offer free chairlift rides on the American Eagle chairlift Saturdays and Sundays 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. (weather permitting) throughout September, allowing hikers and mountain bikers to enjoy beautiful views of the Ten Mile and Gore ranges as they turn from green to gold. There is no charge to ride the chairlift. The mountain bike trail is open everyday, but lift-served access is available only on Saturdays and Sundays.
Also each weekend day, Copper will host its popular Solitude Station Barbecue, located at the top of the American Eagle chairlift. From 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., enjoy homemade goodies while you take in the beautiful fall foliage.

Granite Falls to Darrington (50 miles) - Shady west-side forests and inviting rivers create most of the character of this easy, pleasant drive. A good escape from Seattle, the route passes many places to stop and look or walk for a while, including interpretive trails suitable for wheelchairs. There are many viewpoints and historical areas, mostly from the early mining days. Visit the historical Verlot Public Service Center located just inside the forest boundary. About halfway round the Loop, stop and enjoy the beautiful view of Big Four Mountain along an easy 1 mile trail. A foot-bridge ofers a unique view of the South Fork Stillaguamish River.

August 4, 2003 - They are both 21 years old, compete in wheelchair athletics and will both be in Selkirk, MB to compete in the 2003 Western Canada Summer Games. But though their ages are the same, they are ages apart in experience.
More than 330 athletes from across the province will be representing British Columbia at the WCSG in the communities of Selkirk, Stonewall, Beausejour and Gimli, Manitoba, Aug. 1 - 10, 2003.
Vancouver's Kiran Aujilay has been competing in the sport for five years. She got her start at the 1999 Western Canada Summer Games in Prince Albert, Saskatchewan and now hopes to qualify for the 2004 Paralympic Games in Athens next September.
"Currently I'm trying to achieve 'A' standards in my sport in the 100m, 200m and 400m to make the Paralympic Team for Athens 2004," says Aujilay. "In the 400m I'm only a couple of seconds off the standard but I still have to work on the 800m and the 1500m."
Her career hi-light was winning the silver medal in the 400m at the 2001 Canada Summer Games in London, ON. "Although I have had faster times since, it was probably the most focused race I have every competed in.

IT'S 7: 30 a.m. The cross-country racers are the sport's squares: deadly serious, watch-every-calorie, Lance Armstrong types, focused obsessively on heart rates and pedaling cadence. Battling the thin mountain air and dozens of other riders in lung-busting 36-mile races, complete with thousands of feet of climbing, cross-countryers have no choice but to be in impeccable physical condition. The downhillers battle one another in two race formats loosely modeled on alpine skiing. Tonight, Friday, July 28, the dual slalom will go off, riders weaving around ski slope-style gates as they charge head-to-head over a jump-infested tenth-of-a-mile track. On Sunday racers will combat the clock as they race solo over a treacherous rock-strewn course that will send them plummeting 1,500 vertical feet in a mile and a half. In this sport, winning is part survival: 1 out of 10 pros at the last race didn't finish, owing to either crashing or equipment failure. The crop-topped blond yanks off his goggles and full-face helmet and catches his breath. Then Kohut throws a rope to a guy waiting on a sputtering four-wheeled motorcycle and gets a tow back up to the starting line.

But she's always bravely cast her net into the sports world, riding a two-wheeler when she was five years old, leaping straight from tricycle to bicycle without the comfort of training wheels. She played hockey with a boys' peewee team before the girls formed a league of their own. She takes great delight in swooshing down a mountain on a snowboard.

Photo Gallery Siemens Action Asia Himalayan Mountain Bike Series 2002 Hong Kong, Malaysian Riders Impress in Himalaya Photo Gallery Results Competitors with everything from mountain bikes to wheelchairs came to Nepal for this years Siemens Action Asia Himalayan Mountain Bike Series, a 3-day stage event Nov 22nd-25th circling the Kathmandu valley surrounded by snow-capped peaks. To keep with the event's tradition a street parade through Thamel, Kathmandu took place the day before the event itself got underway. More than 150 mountain bikers, wheelchair and disabled competitors biked or walked while VIPS including the head of the Nepal Olympic committee, Government and Tourism Board officials to Embassy officials rode in rickshaws in front of thousands lining the streets. "It made me realize why I love racing so much. A beautiful course with fantastic support...it was an incredible scene." International riders from Germany, Austria, Hong Kong, Malaysia and other western countries probably gained in confidence seeing the local Nepalese riders with outdated bikes without lycra padded shorts and all the nice gear that goes along with riding. That confidence soon evaporated at next day's start when local riders quickly set the pace with German Werner Wagner, Europe's winner of the famous Trans Alp race and Austrian Martin Hornegger. Any thoughts of the local Nepalese riders being slow was a myth as they were acclimatized to the Himalayas from birth, many being mountain bike guides riding up to 7 days a week.
