[Sign Up Here] Trails: Northern California and Nevada Tahoe Rim Trail The Tahoe Rim Trail (TRT) is a 165 mile trail circling one of North America’s most spectacular sights, Lake Tahoe. It meanders on stark ridges high above the deep blue lake and past glacier carved lakes in remote wilderness. You will pass through green meadows loaded with wildflowers and summit a peak of over 10,000 feet. Along its journey, the trail passes through three wilderness areas, two states, and two mountain ranges. The trail provides a tremendous variety of vistas and plant communities, but awesome views of Lake Tahoe, for mile after mile, are the trail’s most sensational feature. What makes the TRT especially unique is the fact that it is a big loop going all the way around the lake. If you backpack the entire trail, you can watch where you are going, and where you have been, as you slowly circle the lake. One can hike the entire TRT in about two weeks, or access its eight trailheads for a wide variety of day hiking or backpacking ventures. Former Mountain Biker set to Challenge Wheelchair Athletics at Canada Summer Games July 31, 2001 - A Cowichan Bay athlete is gearing up for his first big wheelchair athletics competition - the 2001 Canada Games less than a year after a tragic accident ended his mountain biking career. The 27-year-old wheelchair athlete was fighting fires in northern, BC less than a year ago and competing against top World Cup mountain bike racer Roland Green in the BC Cup Off Road Race series. Alan Bergman was sixth overall in 2000 but all that changed in a blink of an eye. "I worked on a rappel crew fighting fires last summer and they allow us to train from one to two hours a day to keep in shape," says Bergman. "I sprinted to the top of a mountain viewpoint and was taking in the view. I had a fear of heights so I thought I was far enough away from the cliff. I leaned on a tree to stretch, the tree was rotten and it gave way. Next thing I knew, I fell 60 feet, bounced around for another 20 and hit a tree. I crushed my L2 (lumbar) vertebrae. Unfortunately I was running alone." Bergman spent a month-and-a half at GF Strong Rehabilitation Centre as an in-patient and the same amount of time as an outpatient. He decided right away to use his competitive spirit and take up a sport that was as close to cycling as possible.

Until recently, there were only those big clunky ones, and then the revolution started with faster, lighter designs. When it comes to getting off the beaten path, the off-road wheelchair is built for speed and just about any kind of terrain. High-tech athletic equipment for people with disabilities is a field that's moving as fast as the people using it. The Cobra, an off-road wheelchair, was designed and built by John Castellano. Castellano is the president, chief engineer, and sole assembly line worker of Up And Over the only off-road wheelchair company on the planet building the Cobra. "I came up with an idea back in 1984 after reading an article in Car And Driver on the lightweight wheelchair revolution," he explains. "These sort of serve multiple purposes they sometimes serve as a pair of hiking boots and they also serve as a mountain bike; it'll go down virtually anything. You can ride this down the stairs without crashing it. You can crash it, too, if you try hard enough." A graduate of MIT, Castellano builds the Cobras in his garage near Berkeley, California. The biggest challenge was designing the front-end geometry. It took forty-three computer prototypes just to get it so that it wouldn't plow into the turns, yet still stop in a straight line. The front end of the wheelchair steers with handle bars that's spring loaded to self-center. That means if you're pushing on the hand rims, it will go in a straight line.

View 9 Full Screens of the Championship The 78 km marathon on August 31st provided a rare opportunity for amateurs who are members of a national cycling association to test their mettle against the pros and was the inaugural edition of this event at the World Championship level. Over 1,000 riders from 36 countries tackled the challenging trek through the foothills of the Swiss Alps; about 600 crossed the finish line. The race came down to the final 100 meters as hometown hero Thomas Frischknecht (SUI) outsprinted Bart Brentjens (NED) at the finish line. The race start and finish was at the Cornaredo in Lugano and the course was comprised of 28km of asphalt, 22 km land and grass and 28km of single track, reaching its apex of 1650m at the Capanna Bar. Our good friend Massimo Donati, a film director with the Swiss-Italian national broadcast channel TSI, and a passionate amateur mountain biker, rode the marathon and achieved a very respectable 155th place. “I found the marathon extremely hard,” he says, “but it was truly a return to the origins of mountain biking: adventure, discovery, and a feeling of brotherhood between all participants. Not like the Italian ‘Grandondo’ races. The great Frischknecht was the only one able to keep cycling on the way up Monte Baro, with winds reaching 90 km/hour.”
