Wheelchair Sports Association visit
On Wednesday 26 our year 9 and 10 Sports Science classes were visited by two wheel chair athletes, Janelle and Lisa. They spoke to our students about the responsibility required to hold a drivers license and the consequences of making bad decisions when driving, especially driving under the influence of alcohol, speeding and not wearing seatbelts. Our visitors shared their stories with us and made quite an impression with their openness and great attitude to life. The students then tried out wheelchair basketball, which everyone really enjoyed. It gave the students an idea what life in a wheelchair might be like and new-found respect for the achievements of wheelchair athletes. This was a really worthwhile visit.

INTRODUCTION
REVIEW AND THEORY
Owen (1982) stated that "maneuvering the wheelchair is the most basic skill" in wheelchair basketball. A wheelchair basketball player must maneuver their chairs during play with and without the ball, varying speed, stopping quickly and frequently and rapidly changing direction (Owen, 1982). The greatest potential for injury is usually associated with lost of stability during rapid direction changes resulting in falls. Therefore to assess the suitability of a sports chair for wheelchair basketball, chair stability during wheeling with a rapid direction change was suggested.
PROCEDURES
RESULTS AND DISCUSSION
Lateral stability was evaluated in the turn by monitoring the vertical displacement of the frame markers. There was no significant variance in these measures. Since no variance was apparent it was concluded that all chairs had equally good lateral stability in the turns, i.e. the chairs did not tip up onto the turning wheel during hard tight angle turns. Stability in the front to back direction proved to be more varied. The mean maximum vertical displacement of the front caster of the BMW chair was 2.39 cm with a range of 0.4 to 8.0 cm. The mean for the subjects' own chair was 3.05 cm with a range of 0.7 to 6.0 cm. A paired t test comparison revealed that these differences were not significant at the p
