BASKETBALL MAKES A WELCOME RETURN AFTER SUMMER BREAK
After the summer break the Swindon Kings Wheelchair Basketball Club are once again back to training. The Club meets at the Dorcan Recreation Complex on Mondays from 5.30pm – 7.00 pm and costs £2.50 per week. Newcomers are welcome and playing experience is not necessary.
In January 2001 the Swindon Kings Wheelchair Basketball Club was set up under the guidance and direction of the Sports Development team.
Wheelchair basketball is a fun, fast, exciting and skilful sport. It is played to the same rules as basketball (with a few simple adaptations), with the same ball, on the same size court and with baskets at the same height as running basketball.
Wheelchair basketball can be played by anyone, male or female, with a lower limb disability. People play it from practically all of the physical disability groups, such as those with a spinal cord injury, polio, cerebral palsy, multiple sclerosis or amputees. Able-bodied players are also able to play within the Wheelchair Basketball league. The league has a classification system, which can accommodate all abilities
The Club has received two Lottery Awards from the Awards for all programme to purchase some purpose built wheelchairs, pay for facility hire and coaching which has set them on their way. They have also received grants from GWR and the Co-op dividend fund and sponsorship from Nationwide. During the summer of 2001 the outdoor basketball courts at Dorcan Recreation Complex were resurfaced with Lottery grant and partnership funding from Swindon Borough Council.

The Ottawa-Carleton Wheelchair Sports Association (OCWSA) is a non-profit organization that was established to encourage participation in the sport of wheelchair basketball throughout eastern Ontario and western Quebec. It supports the initiation and early development of new sport opportunities for persons with a disability. The OCWSA started in 1976 as a wheelchair basketball program at the Royal Ottawa Hospital. Today it is a flourishing organization operating under a board of directors, elected from its general membership. The association operates competitive and recreational basketball programs to suit the needs and interests of its members. As well, it actively pursues involvement with the community to promote familiarization with wheelchair sports and to educate the public about the abilities and capabilities of persons with a disability. The OCWSA currently supports two competitive level teams, the Royals and the Jazz.

Back to CAAWS June 13, 2000 Canada Jets, Australia Lags The Canadian Women's Wheelchair Basketball team, competing in the EnergyAustralia Slam Down Under, opened up their 5 game series against Team Australia in Sydney, Tuesday with a convincing 56-40 victory. The Canadians were sharp, shooting 47% from the floor despite arriving in Australia from Vancouver on Monday morning. An analysis of morning resting heart rates and a 2-kg medicine ball throw confirmed to the coaching staff that the team had indeed adjusted to the travel and time change effectively. This was accomplished by a series of guided visualization sessions prior to leaving Vancouver and through careful planning and execution of the travel process.
Team Canada used all 12 players in the match to stay fresh and maintain the high level of intensity required by their constant pressure defense and high speed fast breaking style of play. Australia tried to find lineups that would be effective, but unable to mount any sustained scoring drives. The Australians were led by perennial all star Liesl Tesch who scored 22 points (10/22 from the field, 2/6 foul shots), hauled down 8 rebounds, had 4 steals and 5 turnovers. By contrast the rest of the Australian team shot 6 for 44 from the field. The Aussies did however have more offensive rebounds than Canada (22-13).

SCI NETWORK/KESSLER REHAB SUPPORT NEW WHEELCHAIR BASKETBALL TEAM
The SCI Network and Kessler Adventist Rehab Hospital in Rockville, Maryland have formed an alliance with a local wheelchair basketball team. Some of the team members of the newly formed Kessler Rolling Knights have been an unofficial farm team for the National Rehabilitation Hospital Ambassadors. Many of the Knights play with the Ambassadors when the NRH team is short handed. Like their mentors, the Ambassadors , the Knights are about more than basketball. Education and community involvement are at the heart of both teams With new sponsorship from SCI Network and Kessler Rehab of Rockville, Maryland, the Knights now become independent. The NRH Ambassador s Wheelchair Basketball team has been in existence since 1970 and has been identified by several names, such as UFO's, Bullets , and Warriors . The team has remained quite competitive throughout its 30-year history, having been ranked in the top 10 several times in two different divisions. The team typically plays a 30-40 game regular season schedule. While this may include tournament play, the
