The LeBron James of college wheelchair basketball Published Monday, May 10, 2004 12:23:11 PM Central Time
By JENNIFER CHAMBERS The Detroit News DETROIT Matt Scott looked down on wheelchair basketball. Too slow. Not enough action, the Southfield teen thought. Then Scott wheeled himself out onto the court and found himself in the middle of an aggressive, fast-paced basketball game where players flipped out of wheelchairs to snatch rebounds and raced downcourt to shoot three-pointers. "Once I checked it out, I realized how competitive it was," Scott said by phone from University of Wisconsin at Whitewater. "I could dribble and shoot, but it took me awhile to get established." Five years after playing his first game, Scott, who has spina bifida, a birth defect in which part of the spinal column is exposed, has become a top junior wheelchair basketball player in the United States. Last month, the 19-year-old traveled to Sydney, Australia, with his team, the USA Juniors, and won a gold medal after beating the Australian All-Stars in the 2004 National Junior Wheelchair Basketball Championships. Scott, who has been wheelchair-bound his entire life and is paralyzed from the waist down, was named most valuable player of the game and tournament. He had 28 points, 20 rebounds, 13 assists and nine steals in the championship game.

Any wheelchair basketball tips? Around the Academy:
I play wheelchair basketball and am studying a BTEC National Certificate in Sports Development and Fitness. I'm looking for some help with tactics for able or disabled basketball but I can't find anything, can you please help? Marcus, Cheltenham Coach replies:
Marcus, This is a good question! It's easy to find books on how to learn the skills of the game but when it comes to tactics the best way is on the job training. It makes no difference whether you consider able or disabled basketball. Each coach will make decisions depending on the situation and based on their previous experience. The solution is to become a regular spectator and watch the different things that the coaches do to affect the game. They call different plays, make substitutions and call time outs to change the flow of the match to suit their team. A game looks very different when you watch as opposed to when you are playing. I'm sure your local team will let you become involved with the coaching side of things and get you first hand experience mapping out the tactical decisions that influence the outcome of any game.

A Strange guide to wheelchair hoops Around the Academy:
Tactics are everything in this wonderful sport
Britain's wheelchair basketball star Clare Strange is gearing up for her second Olympics. Here she gives a basic guide to one of the fastest growing sports in the world.
Clare Strange
GB wheelchair basketball star
Wheelchair basketball is just a fantastic sport. In 1997 I broke my back in a horse-riding accident and a year later was playing for the GB wheelchair team at the World Championship in Sydney. And then two years after that I was back in Sydney for the Paralympics. I had never played basketball before but I worked so hard on my physio. And playing for the Milton Keynes Aces wheelchair basketball club really helped. It's not that different from able-bodied basketball though. Apart from a few different foul rules because of the wheelchair. One of the things that can seem confusing in the game is the points classification system for the players. Clare battles for the ball at the 2000 Paralympics Each player is given a points total that is measured by their disability.
