2000 Canadian Junior Wheelchair Basketball Championships About Wheelchair Basketball
History of Wheelchair Sport
Prior to World War II, opportunities for people with disabilities to participate in sports did not exist. As a result of the war, there was a drastic rise in the number of young men with disabilities including spinal cord injuries (SCI) and amputees. There was a need for these newly returned veterans to do rehabilitative work to help them adjust to life with their new injuries. One of the aspects of rehabilitation was to improve the individual’s ability to maneuver their wheelchair and to overcome obstacles. Often, this was accomplished through the use of adapted sport activities. As the young men became more efficient at using their wheelchairs, they desired a sense of normalcy to their lives. The evolution of rehabilitative exercises to adapted sports thus began. In 1944, Sir Ludwig Guttmann laid the foundation for the development of wheelchair sports.

Second Annual IHSA Wheelchair Basketball Camp
The University of Illinois hosted the second annual IHSA Wheelchair Basketball Camp from June 11-15. Twenty-eight adventurous athletes participated in this great event. Three practice sessions a day ensured that each of the athletes had the opportunity to learn, practice and perfect their basketball skills. And most importantly, they had the chance to use these skills in scrimmages, and a playoff tournament. While the camp was tiring, enthousiasm and desire to play the game kept spirits high. Congratulations to all of those athletes involved! You did a great job!
We would like to thank the IHSA for continuing to support the IHSA Wheelchair Basketball camp at the University of Illinois. We would also like to thank Quickie for their support of this camp. Not only did they provide basketball wheelchairs for athletes to try out, but they also encouraged the participation of Dave Durepos, NWBA Final Four MVP from the Milwaukee Bucks, and a member of the Canadian National team. His presence at the camp demonstrated what hard work, dedication and love of the sport can lead to- being a world class athlete!
We look forward to making the IHSA Wheelchair Basketball Camp even better next year. Information for next year's camp will be available in the future.

http://www.sportingwheelies.org.au/sport/basketball.htm
Wheelchair Basketball is a spectacular team sport modelled on the able-bodied game of basketball. It is played on standard basketball courts with normal height rings and backboards. The only major difference is that Wheelchair Basketballers substitute wheels for legs. The game can be played by anyone, including able-bodied athletes. Most of the centres have spare chairs so that friends and family can join in the fun. Wheelchair Basketball is perhaps the most developed of all of the Association's programmes. The programme boasts opportunities for junior players, senior athletes, newcomers and social players at all levels of competition.
Competitions / Programmes Regions Brisbane
Social competition is held every Monday night at the Clem Jones Centre in Carina.
There are 2 B-Grade teams and 4 A-Grade teams, with competition starting at 6.50pm. Cost is $60 per season per member.
