Mailinglist Schedule Bord Wheelchair Basketball iWheelchair Basketballj Wheelchair basketball is a version of basketball in which all players must remain seated during the game. This game is primarily designed for persons with lower extremity disabilities who are able to take a sitting position.
The rules of wheelchair basketball are basically the same as those of regular, or running, basketball, except for some modifications made for players in wheelchairs as mentioned below. This means that the playing court dimensions, height of the goal (basket) and ball size are identical to those for regular basketball. As a matter of course, players are not allowed to stand up and walk during the game. Wheelchair basketball is very popular among people confined to wheelchairs around the world. In the United States and some other countries, there are even professional wheelchair basketball teams. Rules specific to wheelchair basketball 1. A player who is holding the ball may push on the wheels of the wheelchair no more than twice, before dribbling to maintain possession of the ball.
2. Each player is given a point value according to the system of player classification by the degree of disability. The total of the points values of the five participating players of a team may not exceed 14.0.

Life goes on...
I had my most recent motorcycle accident not so long ago, back in 1986. I left the rehab center about nine months later and found out that the world around me did not look so different. Life had gone on without me but I just kept on going because I certainly didn't feel any different.
Who is handicapped ?
In fact, I have never considered myself to be handicapped, inspite of my spinal cord injury and an amputation. Whenever there is something I want to do, I go out and do it, and nobody is going to tell me I can't.
That's fun. Let's go do it !
While lying on my back in the hospital, I figured it would be fun to hitch-hike across the Sahara Desert. So one of the first things I did after leaving rehab was to fly to West Africa and hitch-hike back home across the desert. top of page
Nobody. Never.
I have travelled to a lot of places since 1986, within Europe, in Africa, in North and South America... During all those trips, I never let anybody tell me that I was too disabled to do something I had set my mind to do.
Nobody.

Comberton: Hereward Heat Wheelchair Basketball Club
Hereward Heat Wheelchair Basketball Club train throughout the year at Comberton Village College Sports Hall on Tuesday evenings, 8.00 p.m. until 10.00 p.m. The club runs two teams who play in the Great Britain Wheelchair Basketball Association's national league. The club's 1st team play in the 1st Division and the 2nd team play in 3rd Division Central. The club plays its home matches at the St. Ivo Recreation Centre, St. Ives. The 1st team play in a national section of the league, so it has to play away matches as far afield as Glasgow, Edinburgh, Newcastle, Teesside, Manchester, Liverpool, Chester and South London.
Wheelchair basketball is a mixed sport for people with a lower limb disability, which prevents them from playing the running game. This includes players from a number of disability groups, amputees, spinal injury, spina bifida, polio, cerebral palsy, being just a few. In Great Britain, to aid development of the sport, able-bodied players are allowed to play in the 2nd, 3rd and 4th Divisions. The game is played on a full size court with the baskets at regulation height. There are very few differences in the rules between the wheelchair and running games, the main one being the dribbling rule, where players may only push twice on their wheels before it is necessary for them to bounce the ball. There is also no double dribble rule in the wheelchair game.
Each player is classified in accordance with their functional ability from 1.0 to 4.5, with a 1.0 point player being the most severely disabled. A 4.5 player generally is able to use leg muscles to assist their range of movement and sitting balance, whereas a 1.0 player would have poor sitting balance with limited range of movement, generally only the upper torso. Able-bodied players are mandatory classified as 5.0 point players. Teams may play a maximum of 14 player points on court at any one time, 15 points in the 2nd, 3rd and 4th Divisions. Women players, when competing alongside men, receive a 1.5 reduction in their classification, whilst juniors (under 18) receive a 1.0 point reduction.

Le Championnat Canadien Junior et Mini en Fauteuil Roulant 2000 de la CWBA About Wheelchair Basketball
History of Wheelchair Sport
Prior to World War II, opportunities for people with disabilities to participate in sports did not exist. As a result of the war, there was a drastic rise in the number of young men with disabilities including spinal cord injuries (SCI) and amputees. There was a need for these newly returned veterans to do rehabilitative work to help them adjust to life with their new injuries. One of the aspects of rehabilitation was to improve the individual’s ability to maneuver their wheelchair and to overcome obstacles. Often, this was accomplished through the use of adapted sport activities. As the young men became more efficient at using their wheelchairs, they desired a sense of normalcy to their lives. The evolution of rehabilitative exercises to adapted sports thus began. In 1944, Sir Ludwig Guttmann laid the foundation for the development of wheelchair sports.
