Cardinal "doubles up" at State Track Meet
For Sarah and Dad the titles keep coming Sarah Cardinal had the best throws of her career at the Idaho State Track and Field Championships, held Thursday May 20th, at Boise State University, and came away with two titles.
The Blackfoot High School Sophomore was expected to win both the shot-put and discus titles and she did not disappoint herself as she put together two 'best ever' performances. The shot-put was Sarah's first event of the day and she improved on her 3rd place finish of last years State Championships with a 4A State record toss of 41'4" and the gold medal. Sarah was the defending champion in the discus throw and she made it two in a row coming through with a career best toss of 140'3" and her second gold medal.

History
Weightlifting was on the program at the first modern Olympics in 1896 with two events: The one-hand lift and the two-hand lift. There were similar events in 1904 and 1906. Weight categories were established in 1920, with medal standings based on the aggregate of multiple types of lifts. There were three lifts in 1920: The one-hand snatch and the one-hand and two-hand clean and jerk. In 1924, there were five: The one- and two-hand snatch, one- and two-hand clean and jerk, and the two-hand press From 1928 through 1972, the three standard lifts were the press, the snatch, and the clean and jerk. Since 1976, there have been only two lifts, the snatch and the clean and jerk. Each lifter is given three attempts at each type of lift. If there is a tie, it's decided in favor of the lifter with the lower body weight. Weight limits have changed several times over the years. Those shown are for the 2000 Olympics.

attempt
Each lifter is allowed three attempts, at requested weights, on the snatch and on the clean and jerk . The results of the best good lifts are added to reach a total. If the lifter doesn't have at least one valid attempt in each of the two lifts, there is no total.
attempt board
An electronically-controlled display that shows the name of the competitor, the weight division, the lift being attempted, the number of the attempt, and the weight to be lifted. The referee decision lights and timing clock are also shown on the attempt board.

Each athlete is weighed, to the nearest 10 grams, two hours before competition begins. If two lifters have exactly the same total , the one with the lower body weight is given the higher ranking.

The Weight
There are two lifts in the weightlifting competition: the snatch and the clean-and-jerk. For both lifts, the competitors lift long metal bars with metal weights attached at either end. Weights vary from 0.25 kg to 25 kg and vary in colour according to weight, red is the heaviest and 2.5 kg is black.
Technique
Competitors decide at which weight to begin and at which subsequent 2.5 kg intervals to continue. All competitors have three attempts at each lift. The weightlifter lifting the highest aggregate total from the two lifts wins. In the case of a tie, the competitor with the lowest body weight wins.
In the snatch, the lifter takes a wide arm position on the bar and raises the weight above his head without stopping in one movement. He must hold the weight motionless until the referee gives the signal for it to be put down. The lift is disallowed if the bar is dropped from any height above the waist.
