Kickboxing is a form of the martial art of karate that has recently grown in popularity due to its great aerobic benefits and self-defense skills. The origins of kickboxing can be found to date back two thousand years in Far East Asia. Kickboxing as we know it today developed under various influences. The first time anything resembling kickboxing was seen, was in the USA in the early 1970`s and was introduced as 'Full Contact Karate'. A new generation of martial art practitioner's disillusioned with the traditional martial arts like karate wanted to experience full contact bouts fought to the knockout. In some of the earlier tournaments the rules where unclear with no clear weight divisions. The development of specialized protective equipment and regulation came from a new controlling body, the PKA, which also created a defined set of rules and clear weight divisions. Kicks were only scored if they landed above the waist. Kicking below the waist was considered a foul, of course today this is allowed under standard kickboxing rules, while above the waist kicking only, remains under the full contact karate rules. In September 1974 in Los Angeles, the first ever world championships of full contact karate were hosted. The bouts took place on mats (no ring) and it was only late in the 1970's that the sport moved into the ring. Initially there were only four divisions. The first World Champions where Jeff Smith, Isuena Duenas, Joe Lewis and Bill Wallace, some of whom became legendary figures in the sport.

We get osteoporosis, diabetes, and obesity largely because we're losing this muscle," Miriam Nelson, an associate professor of nutrition at Tufts University, told ABCNEWS' John McKenzie. But recent research assures women that they need not give in to aging. Pumping iron is now a proven prescription. A recent study, published in the Journal of the American Medical Association , found that post-menopausal women can reduce their body fat, increase muscle mass, build up their bones, and improve their balance by lifting moderately heavy weights on a regular basis.

Description Author Info Table of Contents It's only natural for a beginner to be baffled by the equipment and the lingo of weight training. In this book, you'll find the knowledge and confidence to start a weight training program, either at home or at a gym. Weight Training For Dummies describes more than 150 exercises suitable for rookies and veterans alike. This edition also updates you on the latest in weight training equipment, Web sites, videos, research, and gym classes. Everyone has different reasons for wanting to lift weights. Undoubtedly, many of these reasons have to do with looking better. Sculpted arm and toned "abs" have become somewhat of a fashion statement. But there are even more compelling and, ultimately, more satisfying reasons to lift weights. Here's a reminder of what weight training can do for you:
  • Keep your bones healthy
  • Help control your weight
  • Increase your strength
  • Boost your energy
  • Improve your heart health
  • Improve the quality of life
Lifting isn't one of those activities like, say, checkers, that you can competently engage in after a one-minute explanation.

Thank you for visiting Dumbbells a fitness club on the web. We can’t guarantee that you’ll burn too many calories skimming our site, but take the time to check us out anyway. We decided to do things a little differently. You won’t find high pressure sales. You won’t find “meat heads” (we’ll explain), gym smell, wait times for equipment, fine print, or attitudes. We just have the equipment and the people you need in a clean and comfortable setting. a little history... Back in 1993, a couple of fitness guys got together and decided that downtown Denver needed a different type of health club. The only club options were either huge, expensive places where people either went to “network,” or simply to steam and Jacuzzi themselves. Their fitness rooms were secondary to their massive lobbies, restaurants, pro shops, and other features that had nothing to do with fitness. The lower priced alternatives weren’t any better. What good is a cheap membership to a packed workout room where you have to wait 15 minutes just to use a treadmill? Lifestyles, work schedules, and activity levels have changed over the years, so why didn’t health clubs reflect that change? Rather than sit around and scratch our heads, we created Dumbbells. We offer the equipment and classes you want in a clean and comfortable atmosphere, at a price that’s reasonable.

Weight Training for Endurance Athletes
There seems to be a bit of debate about whether weight training is of any use to athletes like triathletes or cyclists at all. Certainly, the sports science literature is not unequivocal that it is a good thing: there is evidence that whilst weight training increases strength it does not, for example, increase cycling power (1). Maximum power or VO2Max (the athlete's maximal use of oxygen) rather than leg strength are the relevant factors for a cyclist aiming to ride a timetrial quickly (2). Amongst athletes themselves, many worry that weight training in the gym will cause a build-up of muscle making them look like Arnold Schwarzenegger and the increased body weight will result in slower times. But is this true? And if not, will it make you faster? Do the benefits of weight training (if any) adequately compensate for the excruciating boredom of the weight room?
Physiology of the Athlete
My own view is that weight training is useful to at least some but that's it.

Master Weight Lifting Exercises Revealed! Dear Friend, If you are one of those weight lifters that go to the gym day after day moth after month and do the same bunch of weight lifting exercises but can't gain even 1 pound fat-free muscle then this is probably the most important information you'll read this year... I just can't understand why are there so many people who don't achieve their fitness goals although usually the reason for this is so simple - they don't do the right weight lifting exercises. When you enter in a gym the first thing you'll see are the muscular guys who train there. If you don't know which weight lifting exercises work you just watch what these guys do and copy it. Without having even a slight doubt about what you are doing.

Weight Lifting, Weight Training and Supplements
By Mark B. Levin, M.D. and Louis J. Tesoro, M.D.
The student athlete’s competitive environment often fosters the desire to increase muscle mass and strength in the hope of improving athletic performance. We are often queried regarding the advisability of “weight lifting” (lifting maximal weight to build strength and mass) and whether supplements, such as “andro”, DHEA, amino acids or minerals will help. For the reasons outlined in the pages that follow, rather than recommending “weight lifting”, we counsel families that supervised “weight training”, also termed “strength training” (performing multiple repetitions with small amounts of free-weights or low resistance on a universal gym), is more appropriate for a growing youngster. Until growth is finished (usually 18 years old in males and 16 years old in females), “weight lifting” should be avoided as the risk of musculo-skeletal injury (sprains, strains, torn muscles and fractures) is too great. The Committee on Sports Medicine and Fitness of the American Academy of Pediatrics in June, 2001, having reviewed the scientific literature and citing 21 scholarly scientific references, made the following points

Weight Training/Periodizing Your Workout Weight training can be a confusing and frustrating task for most people. Even if you get a membership at some club with your own personal trainer, the fact that personal trainers are less regulated than cosmetologists makes it all the more frustrating. In fact, you should know that most organizations that certify personal trainers, the organizations that certify a majority of the trainers you would encounter at the local gym, certify them over a weekend crash course. If they memorize some data, they are certified. Comforting isn't it? After watching personal trainers put poor, innocent individuals through dangerous workout routines and hearing some of the ridiculous claims these trainers swear by, I decided to do something that people on the internet could not argue with. No promises, just results. You no longer have to believe that I study exercise physiology in order to make my own training for volleyball more effective, or the studying I do on current research is any help at all in weight training. You can simply look at my documented routine and decide what the results mean to you. After all, it doesn't really matter what information I relay to you if you can't use it. If you make a link to my weight-lifting page, make the link to this page so that the user will read my introduction first. The following pages are designed to help you get an overall understanding of why and how I accomplished my goals over the last nine weeks. Click
