of David Holt The Leg Press...Weight Training, part of a cross training system for running and others who use resistance training, as part of a strength training plan. The leg press has many uses. A low foot position allows you to work the calves. Straight legs for the gastroc, bent legs for the soleus. The higher foot position is more conventional, and allows you to work most of the bulky leg muscles. Use slow movement so you work the muscles when the weights are returning to the starting pointyou don. t just train while pushing your legs out straight. Keep knee flexion to 90 degrees or less, to avoid pressuring that joint. Do many reps with light weights (50-60 percent of your max for the exercise) for strength endurance. Do fewer reps with 80 percent max weight for pure (but potentially bulky) strength.

What does quality vs. quantity have to do with older adult fitness? Many times, older adults feel that exercising is not important by expressing "It's too late" or I'm too old for exercise." Fear of injury is another expressed concern. Let's look at the benefits that can be achieved through a weight resistance program and why age is not a factor when it comes to being more fit. Believe it or not, your muscles do not know your age! Remember that your heart is muscle and that a sedentary lifestyle may increase the risk of having a heart attack. Regular exercise is one way to help reduce heart attack risk. Exercise can easily be adapted to target several different health concerns. Whether you are in a wheelchair, use a walker, need to be seated for exercise, or can dance the night away, exercise should be a part of your life. After exercising, "cool down" for a few minutes. Don't stand still or lie down right after exercising. Walk around for a few minutes to let your body readjust gradually to the decreased physical demands. Weight-lifting has helped many older adults:
  • walk faster
  • climb steps easier
  • improve posture
  • increase energy
  • maintain independence
  • increase flexibility
  • decrease risk of certain diseases
  • sleep better
  • eat healthier
  • and possibly gain a new friend or two!

Most of us have jobs and families. Finding time for swimming is hard enough, let alone for weight training. Also most books on the subject are designed for body builders or college age athletes. With the proper guidelines you can weight train, and swim. We will address the frequency of weight training as well as the time spent during the workout. Age has solved the frequency problem, as the natural body steroids decrease as we get older. Therefore it takes our body longer to repair itself after a weight workout. Swimmers in their twenties can do a hard weight workout every second day but every third day seems much better for the older athlete. Find a teacher who can help you learn how to do the exercises correctly. Good technique is one of the most important ways to avoid injury. Some high school coaches or athletic trainers can help you. If a college is located in your town, the weight coach for the varsity athletic teams may be able to give you advice or recommend another teacher. The National Strength and Conditioning Association may also be able to recommend a qualified coach in your area. Advice from people who have never learned good technique themselves, such as parents, friends, coaches or other weight lifters, may not be correct. Weight training or resistance training is the most basic element in muscle development and strength enhancement. Emerging research is also revealing weight training's positive effect on health and well being, disease reduction, self esteem, confidence and longevity.
Training to build muscle size and strength and training to "stay in shape" are very different yet almost identical. As conflicting as this may sound, the basic premise of weight training is to overload the muscle. This overload invokes an adaptation response within the muscle. This adaptation to the overload results in increased muscle strength, density (tone) and size. A team at Baylor University in Texas reported on studies that looked at 160 overweight, moderately obese and sedentary women.
