Why did I create the Rusty Iron Bodybuilding Page? Aren't there hundreds of bodybuilding pages on the World Wide Web, many of which are sponsored by bodybuilders much better than myself? Perspective. That's why. This page was not created from the perspective of a muscular youth who entered bodybuilding in his teens and rose in the ranks of competitive bodybuilding through local, regional, national and international competitions. One of the most persistent myths some women have about strength training is that working out with weights will turn them into female hulks. Unless a woman hits the gym with a vengeance, determined to look like the cover girl of a muscle magazine, it just won't happen. What can happen, though, is that she will end up with a firmer looking body and more. Resistance training, as it is often called, helps a woman develop a stronger heart and stronger connective tissue. It helps control weight and offers protection against osteoporosis, a major debilitating disease in women after menopause. It also gives a woman power over her own life. Just think: No more waiting on the bag boy to take out the groceries or the handy man to carry boxes to the basement. Strength-training studies show that men and women can have a fairly similar increase in strength from resistance training, but women usually start out at a lower level in terms of strength, according to Robin Stuhr, M.A., administrative director and exercise physiologist at the Women's Sports Medicine Center at the Hospital for Special Surgery in Manhattan, N.Y. "Most women just don't have the ability to have an increase in muscle size that men do," says Stuhr.

If you want to see results fast, nothing compares with using weights to tone your body. Lifting weights or using weight machines helps burn excess fat and makes muscles firm. Some experts believe training with weights or other forms of resistance training that force you to work against gravity, such as walking up hills or stairs, can help you resist the ravages of aging. Advantages of weight training In his book, Living to 100: Lessons in Living To Your Maximum Potential at Any Age, Dr. Thomas T. Perls of Harvard Medical School tells us that weight or resistance training is the only known way to guard against age-related loss of muscle tissue. "Preserving or increasing muscle mass indirectly benefits the heart by improving the ability to burn fat," Perls tells us. What's more, weight training has special benefits for the frail elderly. In a 1992 study of infirm, very old senior citizens prone to falling easily, Maria Fiatarone and colleagues at the Hebrew Rehabilitation Center for the Aged observed that after adopting a regular resistance training program, men and women tripled their thigh muscle mass and dramatically lowered their risk of falls. At the University of Alabama at Birmingham, researchers found that non-athletic women between the ages of 60 and 77 who performed the prescribed exercises improved their isotonic strength (the strength needed to move heavy objects) by an average of 52 percent. Isometric strength (the force needed to push against a stationary object) rose by 31 percent, while walking speed increased by 18 percent. Studies like these show that weight training can benefit people at any age.
