If not, then keep reading. P yramid programs have been used by power lifters for years to drag as much strength-building potential out of an exercise. An example of a typical pyramid on a chest workout would be the benchpress: SET #1 135 lbs x 15 REPS SET #2 225 lbs x 10 REPS SET #3 255 lbs x 6 REPS SET #4 300 lbs x 2-4 REPS A s you can see, the idea is to increase the weight on each successive set while dropping the number of reps accordingly. Don't forget to stretch between every set. When I am training my clients I will sometimes superset the lifting exerciese with an abdominal exercise (like hanging knee ups or crunches on a decline bench).

Weight Training Programs For Functional Strength
Home YourSport Contact
If you're not sure why these types of weight training programs are important, take a quick look at the general strength training page. To quickly recap...
  • Functional weight training programs prepare muscles, ligaments and tendons for more intense, specific strength training later on.
  • They help seasoned athletes to regain balance , strengthening under-developed muscles and reducing the risk of both short and long term injury.
  • They provide an important form of respite to strength training athletes, giving the body rest whilst counteracting losses in fitness.
The duration of these weight training programs varies between individuals. If you're a beginner follow a functional strength program for about 8-10 weeks before moving onto more strenuous types of weight training programs. If you're a strength training veteran... 3-5 weeks should be enough. Each of these functional weight training programs works all the major muscle groups each session. Try to perform 2-4 sessions per week depending on your fitness level and experience. One more important point to remember...

If your outcome is to transform your physique then these weight training programs will give you the best results. Additional muscle mass can also improve performance in sports such as football, wrestling and the throwing events in track and field. These 3 weight training programs are tried and trusted body building routines. They all have their advantages, just choose the one that appeals to you most.
Hypertrophy Program #1 - Three Day Alternating Routine
One of the best hypertrophy weight training programs if you're pushed for time in the week. Alternate the 2 sessions over any 3 days and try to leave a days rest in between workouts. In effect you're doing each session 3 times every fortnight. For each exercise complete 3-4 sets of 8-12 repetitions. Choose a weight that allows you to perform a maximum of 8-12 reps. When you can do more than 12 reps increase the weight next session. Warm up thoroughly before starting any weight training session. Session 1 (Chest, Back, Triceps, Abs)

Weight Training Routines: What science has to say about this method of "aerobic conditioning".
Circuit training is a popular form of fitness session used by the army, sports teams, squads of athletes/swimmers as well in health clubs and fitness centres. It is generally assumed that a course of circuit training will improve both aerobic fitness and strength, thus making it a very useful conditioning method. To put this assumption to the test, this article will discuss the research that has examined the physiological effects of circuit training. As with research into the effects of traditional weights or aerobic training programmes, the scientific papers on circuit training mostly date from the '70s and '80s. The reason for this is that once a general consensus has been reached regarding the effects of a particular type of training programme, there is no need to re-research the topic. Nevertheless, as circuit training is widely used these days, it is worth reminding ourselves of those research findings.
Aerobic Itness improvements
Gettman and Pollock, in a 1981 review of circuit weight-training studies, suggest that 8-12 weeks of the kind of circuit session described above results in a 5% improvement in V02max. This is significantly less than the improvement seen from traditional aerobic training methods. Research has shown that continuous running, cycling or rowing at around 75% of max heart rate for 20-30 minutes, three times a week for 8-12 weeks will lift V02max by around 20%.

Cycling regularly is great for lower body strength, but leaves a lot to be desired for the upper body muscle groups. And this can be a major liability - both for roadies who need that extra edge in road competitions and for mountain bikers who need this upper body strength to lift, jump, or just plain muscle heavier bikes over rough terrain and obstacles. A reasonable approach is to focus on building strength (not bulk) in the winter and maintaining it during the peak riding season. WHY "MUSCLE UP"? 1.The upper body, including abdominal muscles , is an integral part of the pedal stroke. A strong torso provides the rigidity to deliver maximum power from the quads to the pedal. On a level stretch, a strong rider will barely move their upper body while those who are tiring will rock their pelvis on the saddle. And watch a group of road riders in a sprint or a technical single track rider pulling and rocking their shoulders and handlebars. This motion actually levers the bike, adding to the power of their legs on the pedals. 2. Muscle strength in the quads and legs can mean the difference between walking and riding up a short (10 to 15 pedal stroke) hill.

Strength home Why/benefits Routine 1-3 ... Strength links Why weight/strength training and what are the benefits ? The benefits of weight training, in correct dosages, are enormous. Every athlete makes the mistake of not putting back into their body what running takes out. An automobile needs services to maintain it in working order. However, an athlete does not maintain their body in the same way. Why ? When the plain truths are there to be seen by everyone. Strength training adds to avoiding injuries as well as being a proven factor in improving performance. What more could one want, in your pursuit of an injury free running life with personal bests included ? The fears of the negative effects, due to weight training
As mentioned, if you apply weight training correctly their should only be positive effects. Runners need strength from their muscles, not bulk. You do not see a 'bulky' world class marathoner. Correct weight training will assist in the prevention of injuries, increase muscle endurance, strengthen weak joints and muscles. It will also minimize fatigue in the upper body allowing you to drive further for longer. The aim of any good weight training routine is to help maintain and develop one's body to deal with the stresses of running.

http://www.treelight.com/health/WeightTraining.html
Your Body Needs Weight Training
[Note: This article is still in progress.] There are several surprises when it comes to weight training. Chief among them are:
  • How vital it is if you really want to get into shape
  • How few exercises are really needed to achieve the body you always wanted
  • How quickly you go into "overtraining" if you do more than that
  • How slowly results are achieved
  • How good you feel, despite the slow growth process
How vital is weight training?
Whether you want to play a sport better, burn fat, or have a physique that people admire (inlcuding yourself, when you look in a mirror), you simply have to add weight training to your exercise regimen. Why? Well, the major reasons are:
  • Weight training builds muscle.
  • Muscle burns fat.
  • More muscle lets you work harder at other activities, which burns more fat.
Surprisingly, nothing comes as close to weight training for building muscle. I discovered this fact quite by accident after years of training in volleyball and martial arts. I had surgery for an unrelated knee injury, and did lots of supervised recovery work using light weights and high repetitions (like 5 lbs for 50 reps). When the recovery process was complete, I was amazed to discover how much stronger those muscles were. Things that had been difficult before, like holding my leg out straight, suddenly became easy! I began to wonder: If that small amount of traning had such a large effect, what would a lot of training do That experience began an exploration of weight training that has continued to this day.
