Bill Pearl is a legendary bodybuilder: Mr. California, Mr. America and 4-time Mr. Universe. A unique thing about Bill is his ability to communicate what he has learned in 50-plus years of weight training to not only top athletes, but to the average person. In a story similar to Bob and Jean Anderson's and their first version of Stretching , Bill and his wife Judy published a massive book on bodybuilding in 1982, Keys to the Inner Universe , a 638-page compendium of bodybuilding exercises, with 1500 exercises and over 3000 drawings. It is used extensively by professional athletes, trainers and serious bodybuilders and has sold over 60,000 copies. Seeing the need for a simpler book, Bill and Shelter published

8. Fat Loss & Weight Training Myths
Fat Loss weight training Myths. For individuals attempting to achieve fat lossfor aesthetics, the intensity of weight training can be a double edge sword.
http://www.exrx.net/WeightTraining/Myths.html
Spot Reduction Myth Contrary to what the info commercials suggest, there is no such thing as spot reduction. Fat is lost throughout the body in a pattern dependent upon genetics, sex (hormones), and age. Overall body fat must be reduced to lose fat in any particular area. Although fat is lost or gained throughout the body, it seems the last area to become lean or the first area to get fat is the midsection (in men and some women) and hips and thighs (in women and few men). Sit-ups crunches leg-hip raises leg raises ... hip abduction , etc. will only exercise the muscles under the fat. Incidentally, fat is also stored under the abdominal muscles and around the intestines and other organs. This can contribute to the "pot belly", pushing the abdominal muscles and the overlying fat outward. This "apple shape" fat distribution has greater health consequences than the lower body "pear shape" fat distribution.
Lower Abdominal Myth
It is widely believe the lower abs are exercised during the leg raise or other hip flexor exercises . It can be misleading to judge the mechanics of an exercise based upon localized muscular fatigue. The primary muscle used in hip flexion is actually the Iliopsoas , one of many hip flexors . The Iliopsoas, indeed, does happen to originate deep below the lower portion of the

Weight Training
Why do we need weight training ?
Better performances can be the product of a number of factors. This product is primarily the outcome of efficient technique, the progression of speed and the maturing competitive attitude on a sound basis of general endurance, all round strength and general mobility. The development of all round strength is best achieved via circuit training and then progressing this through strength training. Weight training is the most widely used and popular method of increasing strength.
How do we get stronger ?
A muscle will only strengthen when forced to operate beyond its customary intensity (overload). Overload can be progressed by increasing the :
  • resistance e.g. adding 10kg to the barbell number of repetitions with a particular weight number of sets of the exercise
Muscle Fibre Hypertrophy
Resistance training will increase the muscle size (hypertrophy). Muscle growth depends on the muscle fibre type activated and the pattern of recruitment. Muscle growth is due to one or more of the following adaptions:
  • Increased number of and size of myofibrils per muscle fibre Increased enzymes and stored nutrients
Which weight training exercises ?

Weight Training with
Dumbbells
Introduction
This is an example dumbbell weight training programme to develop an athlete's general strength.
Before You Start
Prior to starting any training it is recommend that you have a medical examination to ensure it is safe for you to do so. Any application of this training programme is at the athlete's own discretion and risk.
Exercises
Each session comprises of the following exercises:
How many
To conduct this programme you will need to determine your 14 to 20RM, 11 to 14RM, 6 to 11RM and 3 to 6RM. The amount of weight to be used for each exercises is based on a percentage of the maximum amount of weight that can be lifted one time for that exercise, generally referred to as one repetition maximum (1RM). Where appropriate determine your for each exercise and then calculate the required weight as follows:
  • 14 to 20RM = 60% of 1RM 11 to 14RM = 70% of 1RM 6 to 11RM = 80% of 1RM 3 to 6RM = 90% of 1RM
A Thirty Week Programme
General notes:
  • Perform all sets on an exercise and then move to the next exercise Perform all sets until fatigue prohibits the completion of an additional repetition For each exercise monitor the average number of repetitions/set and if the range is exceeded then adjust the weights accordingly at the next session

Weight Training: Beyond the Basics
by Thomas F. Strafaci, CSCS
So you've started a weight training program and you've been at it for 6 months. You've gotten over the initial muscle soreness and stiffness and now you're starting to see a little change in your body. Pretty cool, huh? Well now it's time to move up and beyond your basic program. Intermediate weight training is the level at which 90% of trainees work at for the duration of their weight training lives. Truly advanced programs are usually reserved for bodybuilders, Olympic lifters and power lifters whose needs are very specific and demanding. Let's look at the specific characteristics of a good weight training program and see how they may apply to your program:
Frequency of Training
For optimum recovery, trainees need at least 48 hours between training sessions for the same body part. This rule applies to every trainee...from rank beginner to advanced bodybuilder. If you train all body parts each workout, you should only train every other day. If you prefer splitting body parts, just remember to rest each body part for 48 hours before it's next workout.
Exercise Volume
If you are training every body part at each workout, you should limit your exercises to one compound movement per body part. Compound exercises require the movement of more than one joint, i.e., squats, bench presses, pull downs, etc. If you are splitting your body parts, you can add simple exercises to the corresponding compound exercises. Simple exercises require the isolated movement of one joint. For example, you can add dumbbell flies to your bench press, or leg curls to your squats.

The Benefits of Weight Training Improving or maintaining health should be a primary goal of an exercise program. Health not only refers to the absence of disease or illness but may include the way a person feels about their body, their confidence about participating in a variety of activities, and their overall attitude towards life. For many people feeling physically fit and strong is part of being a well-rounded, confident person. Resistance training (weight training) can play an important role in the development of self-confidence and body satisfaction by increasing strength, building and toning muscles, and increasing muscular endurance. It can also help maintain lean body mass (important for individuals attempting weight loss), decrease the risk of osteoporosis, develop coordination and balance, and prevent injuries resulting from weak muscles.
