walking bus walking bus walking bus walking bus walking bus walking bus walking bus walking bus walking bus walking bus walking bus walking bus walking bus
http://www.walkingbus.com/
The walking bus is the latest safe, fun and healthy way to travel to and from school. Each walking bus had an adult 'driver' at the front and and an adult 'conductor' bringing up the rear. The children walk to school in a group along a set route picking up additional 'passengers' at specific 'bus-stops' along the way. The bus runs rain or shine and everyone wears a reflective jacket. Along the way children can chat to their friends, learn valuable road safety skills and gain some independence.
All walking buses are different!. They vary to suit the needs of the children and their parents.
Some schools have a number of walking buses and some only have one walking bus. Some walking buses operate only on certain days; other walking buses operate only in morning or afternoon. A walking bus at your school could be set up to match the availability of the volunteers. School children from the Foxholes estate Hertford, boarded their daily walking bus for the first time this month and arrived in school healthy and alert.

The Langdale Round
Setting off from Sheffield at the arranged time of 1830 on Friday evening the intrepid "mountaineers" set off to the Lake District with a sense of enthusiasm and expectancy - fuelled by an excellent weather forecast. The party comprised Darren, Mike M, Chris B and Keith - deciding to take the longer but certainly faster motorway route we sailed unusually passed Manchester without a single hitch - and except for belated foggy conditions which slightly slowed our journey down, we rode into Bowness at 2045. Booking into the "MontClare" guesthouse, we immediately recognised that it was "Beggars can't be choosers" scenario (it took over 30 phone calls to actually find vacant accommodation) - we also encountered our first major "rock step" - a slight misunderstanding over the booking, meant that the two family rooms that had been booked turned into a very small twin and a double. Much to the landladies amusement Darren and Keith exchanged several insults on why we had absolutely no intention of sleeping together - even when she informed us that blokes sleep together more than women! The situation was diffused by an offer of an additional room with an increase in rate - which was welcomed by Darren and Keith (more by Keith of course)... Maintaining discipline (before the mighty challenge) - we then conducted a relatively sober crawl around the local hostelries finishing up in the famous excellent pub "Hole In The Wall" - for a fine pint of Hartleys XB and Robinsons - although Young Darren stuck to traditional strong lager. After exchanging pleasantries with a mixed Dutch crowd - who had the affrontery of insulting our "warm beer" when for God's sake they intoduced Heineken to the world, we departed amicably - with Young Darren observing that inspite of the insult he would quite willingly "slip her one!"....well lucky her!

A Walking Tour of Plimoth Plantation
Plimoth (Plymouth) Plantation was the first permanent European settlement in southern New England (AD 1620). Today, this area is the site of a living museum, dedicated to recreating 17th- century lifeways in the New World. Plimoth Plantation includes two main components: 1) a reconstruction of the European village occupied by the Pilgrims and 2) a reconstructed Native American hamlet known as Hobbamock's Homesite. Both components offer interpretive exhibits illustrating many aspects of life. People in historic period costumes carry out the daily tasks which would have been conducted by the occupants of the area. These tasks include cultivation and processing of wild and domesticated plants and animals, house construction, craft production, and socializing (they are a talkative bunch). Walking for Exercise and Pleasure
The President's Council on Physical Fitness and Sports
Walking:
An Exercise for All Ages
Walking is easily the most popular form of exercise. Other activities generate more conversation and media coverage, but none of them approaches walking in number of participants. Approximately half of the 165 million American adults (18 years of age and older) claim they exercise regularly, and the number who walk for exercise is increasing every year. Walking is the only exercise in which the rate of participation does not decline in the middle and later yearn. In a national survey, the highest percentage of regular walkers (39.4%) for any group was found among men 65 years of age and older. Unlike tennis, running, skiing, and other activities that have gained great popularity fairly recently, walking has been widely practiced as a recreational and fitness activity throughout recorded history. Classical and early English literature seems to have been written largely by men who were prodigious walkers, and Emerson and Thoreau helped carry on the tradition in America. Among American presidents, the most famous walkers included Jefferson, Lincoln, and Truman. Walking today is riding a wave of popularity that draws its strength from a rediscovery of walking's utility, pleasures, and health-giving qualities. This booklet is for those who want to join that movement.
