But the jumper course designer is perhaps the biggest piece in the puzzle that either makes or breaks a show for a competitor. The course designer not only has to please the riders, but also the management and the spectators. Jumper course designers are a rare breed in the world of hunter and jumper shows. Currently, there are only about fifty jumper course designers licensed by the United States Equestrian Federation (USEF), and only a handful accredited by the International Equestrian Federation (FEI), making such experts a scarce commodity for a show manager seeking a designer. Equestrian Vaulters Earn Qualifying Scores August 22, 2001 - Vaulters arrived from all corners of the United States. They said it couldn't be done. Some said the vaulters would not come. They were wrong. The opportunity for vaulters to showcase the partnership they have spent the last year perfecting with their horses brought them to Massachusetts. They overcame many obstacles; the distance was just one of many. The horses, the vaulters, the longeurs and coaches made the first American Vaulting Association (AVA) National Vaulting Championships held in the Northeast a spectacular event. Not every vaulter is eligible to participate. Most of the vaulters who were made the sacrifices necessary to undertake the journey. Two hundred and sixty-three (263) vaulters representing more than 40% of the vaulting clubs registered with the AVA arrived with hopes that they would leave Massachusetts one of the 17 division champions. Fifty-one vaulters competed in Gold and Silver divisions. For those competitors, becoming a champion was not the only goal. They each attempted to earn scores high enough to submit to USA Equestrian (formerly American Horse Shows Association) for a World Equestrian Games (WEG) 2002 qualifying score. Nineteen were successful. Eleven of the 40 women who participated in the USA Equestrian recognized classes earned qualifying scores for WEG 2002. Many of the names are familiar in the AVA. Vaulting enthusiasts have watched them develop their personal style. In the years of training, they have increased the difficulty of their freestyle and precision of their compulsories. Mari Inouye, Samantha Smith, Megan Benjamin, Jessica Ballenger, Greta Shryock, Shannyn Poer, Ginny Kaufmann, Alexis Garrod, Michele Cunningham, Alethea Shelton, and Emily Gleason and their horses await future selection trial events. Others may join the list. Only three female vaulters will be selected next summer to participate at WEG IV in Jerez, Spain in September 2002.

Vaulters Eye World Equestrian Games Applications from 24 individual vaulters have been filed with the USA Equestrian Vaulting Committee Liaison for consideration in the selection process for World Equestrian Games IV (WEG IV). WEG IV will be held September 10-22 in Jerez, Spain with the vaulting portion of the competition September 12-15. The selection period for American vaulters will end June 9, 2002 and shortly following that the Vaulting Committee of USA Equestrian will name the three individual men, three individual females and one team eligible to enter the international event. Consideration has been requested by four American Vaulting Teams. Eight vaulters and four alternates are named to each team. Only one of those teams will be named to represent the United States and earn the title "Team USA". The final vaulting contingent will consist of one team of eight vaulters, 6 individual vaulters, and the selected vaulting horses. Riders, drivers, vaulters and horses representing the disciplines of Dressage, Driving, Endurance, Eventing, Reining, Show Jumping and Vaulting will make the journey to Spain.

August 28, 2002 The dust has settled and the vaulters and horses have returned home with the knowledge that dreams can come true. The American Vaulting Association highest honors have been awarded in 17 divisions to equestrian vaulters. National Champions and Reserve National Champion status to be coveted for the next year, until the opportunity to defend their titles occurs in Denver, Colorado in August, 2002. Titles are awarded in Individual, Pas de Deux and Team events divided into levels distinguished by the gait of the horse and earned levels of the vaulters. Crowds of up to 1,000 were awestruck by the spectacular performances inspired from gymnastics and dance performed to music with the moving horse. Many spectators made the trip to the Robertson Park Equestrian Center to view the sport for the first time. After seeing the six A-Teams perform their freestyle (Kur), Jan Hart of Livermore, CA made her way to the AVA booth to make a donation to assist the championship team with their trip to the World Equestrian Games in Spain. Hart stated, “It’s absolutely amazing to see the vaulters working with their horses – it’s a beautiful sport to watch”!

Vaulting is more than leotards and hair braids, that’s for sure! Sunny but windy days greeted the vaulters attending the 9 th NSW Vaulting Championships, held in Sydney at RDA Box Hill. As always, there was a great competitive atmosphere, certainly not lacking in fun and enjoyment for all concerned. A great turnout attended the Championships, over 80 vaulters including about 20 German visitors. The Germans were visiting as part of the Cultural Exchange – a program where Australian and German teams visit each other every few years. The team had been staying in Canberra and Sydney. This meant we could have an international judge for the championships – Ludwigshafen coach Iris Schlobach, which was wonderful. The vaulters ranged from raw novices at their first start to experienced world-class competitors. Teams and horses came from Canberra, Hunter Valley, Southern Highlands, as well as local Sydney teams. Vaulting offers a unique activity for kids of all ages and their families, especially for those who are not horse owners. Vaulting enables youth to learn about horses, make new friends and do cool things on horses safely The focus of these Vaulting teams is to promote character development and athleticism by working together with horses, other vaulters and through competition. Vaulters learn responsibility, teamwork, leadership, self-confidence, mentoring and many other lifeskills. Prior riding, gymnastics, dance or vaulting experience is not required. Each team is an all-volunteer, 501(c)(3) non-profit youth organization sponsored by the American Vaulting Association . These teams provide specially trained horses, leaders, coaches, and a safe environment to learn about horses and participate in the exciting sport of gymnastics and dance on a moving horse. These teams do not offer lessons or classes like a gymnastics or dance academy. New kids are encouraged to come visit, get involved, and become part of the team; learning from the volunteer coaches and other vaulters. Each team usually meets once or twice a week for 2-3 hours year-round. The teams participate in community demonstrations, events and fund-raisers.
