Cory the Clown, an avid unicyclist, explains the history of the one-wheeled cycle and visits a national unicycling convention.
Unicycling is a fun sport. Always wear elbow pads, knee pads, and a helmet when participating in any cycling sport.
Unicycles were discovered when penny farthings (old fashioned bicycles) came to a sudden stop. The rear wheel would lift off the ground leaving the rider on one wheel. Riders discovered that if they removed the rear wheel, they had a unicycle. "Uni" means one. Unicycles come in many sizes, from big wheels to wheels smaller than a dime. The larger the wheel, the more distance covered per pedal.
It takes the average person who rides a bicycle about 10 hours, and the help of a friend to lean on, to learn how to ride a unicycle.
Make sure that the pedals and seat are the right distance for your height. When you are sitting on the seat, your leg should be almost fully extended to the bottom pedal.
Start with a brick or curb behind the wheel so that the unicycle will be stopped and can't slip back. When you hop on, sit up as straight as possible. Both pedals should be in the middle, not up and down. Find your center of gravity and start to pedal forward. Have someone stand alongside of you to hold for balance. Happy cycling!
The Unicycling Society of America has thousands of members from around the world. They have an annual unicycling meet where riders compete and have a good time with unicycling. If you would like more information, contact them at: ecstacy.winternet.com/usa.

Construction
Unicycles comprise a few key parts: the wheel and axle , the frame, the seat, and cranks and pedals . The wheel is the main part of the unicycle; it is essentially a bicycle wheel with a special hub so that the frame and cranks can attach to the side. Unicycles use direct drive , with the crank's rotation directly connected to that of the wheel. The frame sits above the wheel, and the seat is located on top of the frame.
Riding
Unicycles are more difficult to ride than bicycles. They require the rider to maintain balance in two dimensions rather than one, and with their slower speeds their motion has less gyroscopic assistance for maintaining stability Balancing a robotic unicycle forms an interesting problem in control theory
History
Unicycles are thought to descend from the penny-farthing bicycles of the late 19th century. These bicycles had a large wheel in front, to which the pedals were attached, and a much smaller wheel behind for balance. When these bicycles hit a bump, the rear wheel would come off the ground, forcing the rider to balance on one wheel. Early unicycle photographs, which show unicycles with very large wheels, support this explanation.

Mountain unicycling
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. Mountain unicycling , also known as MUni , while not a sport , involves riding unicycles off-road. Mountain unicycling usually takes place on mountain unicycles , which are equipped with fat tires and rugged frames for off-road cycling. Regular unicycles are also commonly used in mountain unicycling, since mountain unicycles are relatively rare. Mountain unicycles can be ridden on the same terrain as a mountain bike . Mountain unicycling is a slower-paced sport than mountain bicycling , since unicycles are more difficult to ride than bicycles, and cannot coast.
Events
Each year, many unicyclists gather for the California Mountain Unicycle Weekend.
History of Mountain-unicycling
Mountain unicycling has been around for a while; a more detailed history should go here.

China Unicycle Association
Beijing, China China Unicycle Association (CUA) The China Unicycle Association (CUA) is the official government organization coordinating and organizing unicycling activities in China. In Chinese, it is actually referred to as the "Unicycle Committee" under the Chinese Cycling Association, which is part of the Ministry of Physical Education (?). But upon my advice the name has been changed since "committee" has the wrong implication in English. I must stress very strongly that the CUA we are talking about is an official government organization that has absolutely nothing to do with the former CUA, of exactly the same name, run by Zhao Yanyang at the time the Great Wall Unicycling Marathon was held in 1993. The CUA is heavily involved in promoting unicycling in Chinese schools, and was responsible for organizing the China Team to Unicon IX in Germany. They already held five national Chinese meets. It is important to point out that the Chinese competiton rules are very similar to the IUF rules. They have translated the IUF rule book into Chinese and have studied it closely. CUA Vice Chairman

Mountain Unicycling, Santa Cruz Ca., 03/20/99 Daniel, Geoffrey, Nathan, John, Bruce, Matt Here is a photo of the group of Mountain Unicyclists that gathered in Santa Cruz on March 20th, 1999 to ride some of the local trails in the surrounding mountains. (I'm on the far right, hiding behind a branch). I origianlly met this group through the internet back in 1997; and first met them face to face while attending the "Muni" (mountain unicycle) weedend at Northstar Tahoe. This group meets monthly to ride different trails in different locations in the west. My thanks go out to John Foss for his efforts coordinating and planning the monthly events! This shot was taken at the beginning of the trail. The area we were riding through is mountain lion country as can be seen by the warning sign in the photo. I must confess that out of this group I was the most inexperienced mountain unicyclist of the bunch, and I found myself typically at the back of the pack. There was one point on the trail where I was a few hundred yards behind the group and out of their sight while traveling up up a muddy stretch of road. While I was going along, I noticed large paw prints, clearly from a full grown mountain lion who had passed by just a few moments before our arrival. (Actually I believe the rest of the group was driving him along in front of the group). It was kind of creepy to realize that by being the straggler I must have appeared as the "sickly" straggler of the prey. For a little while, I felt as though I must have had a "free lunch" sign around my neck as far as my position on the food chain is concerned.

Collected Wisdom on Starting Unicycling
Last Modified: 03/95
I have gone through all articles related to Unicycling from the rec.juggling archives and culled what I felt was useful and interesting information which all beginning unicyclists would like to know. This is a big document, probably of interest only to those who cannot yet ride a uni. Because of its size, I have divided it into four stages and you could maybe read this document in stages. -Ram Prasad Begin Part 1 of this document
thomasl:
there are 2 things to remember when trying to learn to ride 1. you must keep your weight on the seat, NOT on the pedals. 2. sit up very very straight, as if the seat post is going straight up your ass into your back (look at the great riders, that is how they look) other things: when you start the pedals should be almost on a horizontal plane, and your f first leg "stroke" will be to push down. getting on with one pedal up and one down ensures you of severely whipping a pedal around into your shin when you make that first step on. a good idea in any case is to wear nice padded hightops and kneesox and long pants and chainmail. then, when you start going, KEEP PEDALING. forward momentum is critical. when you are riding you (and the uniseat and fork etc.) will be leaning very slightly forward, which is the direction you are traveling.

http://www.teachcircus.com/unicycle.html
UNICYCLING (Click photos to enlarge) Teaching students to ride unicycles may seem daunting to teachers. However, it can be taught quite effectively by teachers with knowledge of basic progressions. It should be understood that these skills usually take more time to learn than juggling and manipulative skills. Students may not experience success as quickly as in other activities, but the rewards of conquering these challenging skills are substantial. There will always be a handful of students who make unicycling their mission. Safety Considerations If you are a Physical Education teacher, think of these skills as similar to gymnastics in terms of class routines and safety procedures. Students should always be supervised when practicing, and should be taught how to spot each other. Horseplay should never be tolerated. People often perceive unicycling as risky, maybe because they have seen a daredevil performer who rode (seemingly) out of control, or on a very tall unicycle. The result is an unfounded perception of high risk. The reality is that when basic safety procedures are followed, unicycle riding is actually safer than riding bicycles, skateboards, and in-line skates. This is because unicycles do not permit the rider to coast or achieve high speeds. Although mild bumps and scrapes do sometimes occur, teachers can minimize this occurrence by requiring students to wear kneepads and gloves while practicing. Many schools also use helmets. Today, helmets are inexpensive and lend an air of safety and forethought to peoples' perceptions of unicycling in a school environment.
