FREEDIVE!
by Terry Maas and David Sipperly Underwater Hockey
If you love the water, enjoy team play and are looking for a way to stay in excellent shape, then underwater hockey is your sport.
Originally played by freedivers to stay in shape during the winter months, underwater hockey has developed into a highly organized and competitive sport over the last 15 years. This lively sport enjoys national and international recognition. To help us explain the basics, we've interviewed Kendall Banks and Tim Burke, two nationally recognized competitors with world championship experience. Tim was the 1996 Underwater Society of America's Underwater Hockey Athlete of the year. Kendall has served as National Underwater Hockey Director for the Underwater Society of America and has represented the United States eight times on the national team in world play; his teammates have elected him captain seven times.
Underwater hockey is loads of fun, but be forewarned: this is one tough sport. It's like running up and down a flight of stairs on a single breath, breathing again at the bottom of the stairs and then repeating this cycle for fifteen minutes. It is a high intensity, anaerobic sport that requires excellent physical fitness. "Although long breath-holds are helpful, they are not critical to success," Tim stresses. "It is more important to couple short, effective breath-hold times-enough to complete each play-with short surface intervals."

By Julie Davis
History

Underwater hockey was invented in 1954 by a Southsea diver called Alan Blake. Originally it was called octopush, 8 players pushing a puck or squid as it is normally known. Now a days it is normally known as underwater hockey although the term octopush is still common throughout Britain.
How is it played?
Players need special equipment to play underwater hockey comprising of a mask, a snorkel, a pair of flippers, a glove to protect your hand and also a pusher. The pusher is a small bat, which is held in one hand. This is used to push and flick the puck to other team members and also to tackle and catch flicks from the opposition. Most people also wear gum shields to protect against impacts to the face. Finally a squid and gulleys are needed. The squid is a circular lead puck covered in plastic and the gulleys are the goals, which are 3 metre long metal troughs. The puck needs to be pushed up a lip into the trough or flicked into the trough. A metal back prevents damage to pool tiles and rebounds normally fall into the tin.
As mentioned above a team comprises of up to 10 players. For tournaments two extra players can be taken but only ten can be included in each game. From the ten that play in the game, six are in the water at any one time. It is quite an intense sport requiring short bursts of high effort therefore subbing is a continuous and important part of the game. Standard game lengths are 33 minutes, 15 minutes each way with 3 minutes for half time. This is often reduced during tournaments due to a high number of games to be played and time constraints.

The Roger Bacon underwater hockey team in action.

(Brandi Stafford photos) ZOOM HIGHLAND HEIGHTS But the six Roger Bacon High School students, who will make up one-half of the United States Junior Underwater Hockey Team competing at the World Underwater Hockey Championships in Calgary, Alberta, this July, have learned patience in explaining this unusual aquatic game. No, they reply calmly, underwater hockey isn't what happens when the ice rink melts. It's a vigorous derivation of hockey on the bottom surface of a swimming pool. Combining aspects of water polo, hockey, basketball and soccer, the sport meshes splashy grace with the occasional rough-and-tumble of a rugby scrum. Roger Bacon is the only high school in the nation with its own team, and junior Andrew Kalvelage is glad of it. The 17-year-old will be among the six representing America in the junior championship and is an enthusiastic ambassador of the game. Minutes later, as if to demonstrate his point, he emerged from the pool bloody in the face after being cut by the hard rubber edge of a swimming fin.

Underwater hockey is played on the bottom of a pool. Players wear mask snorkel and fins. It is a "breath hold" sport. Players rotate down to the bottom and move a 3 lb lead filled and plastic covered puck using short sticks held in a padded, gloved hand. There are 10 foot wide goals on each end of the pool. Players can pass the puck with a flicking action which can propel the puck 10-13 feet and further. The puck can fly through the water 2-3 feet above the pool bottom. Water is an "equalizer" allowing men, women of all sizes to play. The game is allot of fun and great exercise.
