TUG OF WAR The Basics of the Game. The sport of tug of war is very simple in concept. In the game of tug of war there is a rope, with people on both ends of it, the people on one end are trying to pull harder than the people on the other end of the rope. If you a nd you team pulls the other team over a certain point then you win. When you consider the physics needed in order to be good at tug of war, it becomes a bit more difficult. Here is a small look into those things. Forces from Both Sides. When you first line up next to the rope before you start a tug of war match you want to stand so that when you hold the rope you dominate hand will be in the back, this makes it easier to pull the rope. As a tentional force is excerted on the rope, you will want to lean back on the rope to counter act the force being excerted on the rope in the opposite direction. The force of your body weight is probably only enough force to put the forces from both sides in equilibrium. To over come that equilibrium, you must excerpt more force than the person on the other side of the rope, that is where you arms come in. We know that F=ma (Force = Mass x Acceleration). Since your mass is constant, and so is the mass on the other side of the rope, you can increase the Force you are excerting, and that should increase the acceleration of the rope. You can get this Force the old fashion way, pull. Using your Torque Torque is given as t=Fd. Torque is the concept that if you want to turn some thing in a circular motion, the larger your radius, the easier it will be. This is important in tug of war because if you plant your feet they become like hinges on a door. You want to keep your weight high and also hold the rope high so there is a large distance between your feet, which you are rotating on, and the force you are excerting. This gives you more torque. As you hold the rope tight you want to lean back more and more, the rope will use your torque to pull the rope in your direction. But when you lean back you want to make sure that you do not just sit down. If you sit , then you are stuck in the sitting position and you will not be able to take steps backwards, which is the whole point of the game. So when you lean back stay strait and use your torque to your advantage.

The once-influential movement is taking heat for its criticism of liberal presidential candidates
by Ronald Brownstein
The New Democrat movement has scuffled with the left over the party's direction for nearly 20 years. The moderates, working mainly through the Democratic Leadership Council, provided an important source of ideas and support for Clinton in 1992 and 1996 and Al Gore in 2000. But the movement has splintered in the 2004 contest, with its key figures dividing among the party's leading presidential contenders. These sharp exchanges underscore the ideological fissures reopening as Democrats try to set their post-Clinton course. Agreements Crumbling "It is a matter of arithmetic: If we are going to win, we have to win not only the Democratic faithful, we have to win swing voters," said Al From, founder and chief executive of the DLC. "Somebody has to remind this party that the real prize is winning the White House and not just winning the nomination." The problem facing the DLC is that even some Democrats sympathetic to the group fear it may be hurting the party's chances of capturing the White House by launching such pointed attacks on some of the party's '04 candidates.

Maselino Masoe - Fotopress Tug Of War Over Masoe 05/05/2004 08:31 AM NewstalkZB The murky world of boxing management is rearing its ugly head again. This time it is over the management of new WBA middleweight champion, Maselino Masoe. Masoe's manager Mike Edwards says he is being placed under pressure by other promoters and managers who are looking to cash in. Edwards says he wants some value for his investment. He is not happy about putting Masoe in a world title position and then having to argue with Don King over where to stage the defence. However, it also looks like a trans-Tasman tug of war is developing between Edwards and Queensland-based trainer Noel Thornberry.

The wisdom is in the perfect balance of still and movement.
It is a science because of the integration of science and strength a nd its humanity is that it is a war of peace, it is a strong team linked together with a rope.

Tug of War Another sport with considerable tradition: tug of war as a competitive match of strength between two teams was practiced as early as 500 B.C. by Greek athletes. It was also considered an ideal physical training and a perfect workout as basis for many other sports. The teams of eight members are captained by the lead person - the first in line - and the anchor: the last man or woman who may wrap the rope around his or her body once. The key is for the rope to be pulled in a straight line from the lead to the anchor. The team pulling the center of the rope four meters from the starting position is declared the winner. The rope is between 33,5 and 36m in length, 10 to 12,5cm in diameter, and of hemp. Go to the site of the Tug of War International Federation - TWIF, click on the pictogram!

The Pride season has officially begun, with Oxford staging its second annual event over the weekend.
Despite the grey weather and threat of rain, organisers say more than 2,500 people attended the May Day celebrations, which were intended to promote links within the city's LGBT and straight communities.
It was hoped that a free fun day for all would help forge these links further, as well as highlighting the city as a gay friendly place.
“It was a great day and a great start to this year’s Pride celebrations across the country," Oxford Pride chair Karl Andrews said today.
"We look forward to welcoming more lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender visitors to Oxford and showing what the city has to offer."
He adds that the crowning moment of the day was the blessings received by seven couples - one of which was heterosexual - from Father John Hyde, of the Open Episcopal Church.

The high cost of college with a twist. Two decades ago, the Supreme Court ruled that anyone living in America, citizens and non-citizens alike, was entitled to a free public education through 12th grade. As a result, millions of illegal immigrants attend school every day. But few if any go to college.
